Etroubles is a small town in the Aosta Valley of Italy, which is in the Italian Alps. Etroubles borders Switzerland near Bourg-Sainte-Pierre and is only a short drive from the French border. In medieval times, this stretch of mountain pass was a stop along the Via Francigena, the pilgrim route to Rome from the British Isls, requiring porters and guides to get over the mountains. Today the short drive to Switzerland is by tunnel.
To get here, you can take a train into the Aosta Valley from Turin, Milan, or Geneva; the trains stop at Aosta and you will need to catch a bus from there. Most bus schedules coincide with the train arrivals so getting into the small village is rather easy. There are six minor airports within two hours of Etroubles; the closest is Sion Airport. Your hostel or accommodation might be able to assist you with getting here if the buses aren’t running. If you have your own car, getting here is much easier!
Etroubles has long been a skiing destination, and in the winter the town fills up with weekend holidaymakers from France, Switzerland, and Italy. The main language in this part of Italy is French, not Italian. Budget accommodation here is scarce; there are only a couple of hostels in town. Hostels in Etroubles cater to winter sports enthusiasts and summer hikers. The small town also has an old church and medieval frescoes, as well as a bell tower. There is also an open-air modern art museum worth visiting.
In the summer, definitely get out into the hills and explore. If you are here in February, don’t miss the winter carnival and parade, Coumba Frieda, that coincides with the anniversary of Napoleon’s troops passing through. In the summer, the Veilla festival is a more cultural event, with cheesemaking, wheat-threshing, and more old agricultural customs taking centre stage.
