Get to know Wexford (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you are better prepared for what to expect, what not to expect and can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Wexford. To help you make friends with Wexford before you visit, we've included a few helpful and fun things you should know about the area. Enjoy!

Wexford is a harbor town on the southeast coast of Ireland, just south of the Wicklow mountain range and Dublin. Waterford is to the east, and though it’s a bigger city, Wexford certainly has a lot to offer and it's worth booking a hostel here. You can reach Wexford by car, bus, or train fairly easily; cyclists and hitchhikers might have a difficult time getting to Wexford simply because the geography of the roads makes it tricky to navigate safely. You’ll find everything you need in Wexford, including pubs (Sky and the Ground is great!), a place to do laundry, a post office, ATM, free internet at the library, and of course a hostel. Parking is available, but sometimes can be a bit tricky.

While certainly less dramatic than the west coast of Ireland, Wexford has a rough beauty about it. The harbor is a great location to explore, and there are lots of wonderful places to go for a hike or a walk in the area. Mt. Leinster and the Comeragh Mountains offer wonderful views of the surrounding areas, but make sure to wear proper hiking footwear and bring a jacket in case of foul weather. The Wexford Coastal walk (it’s easy to find and is well marked) is another great way to see the diversity of Wexford’s coast. St. Declans Way is also beautiful, and you’ll get to see Lismore Castle along the way.

In town are St. Iberius Church and the Franciscan Friary, which are both interesting pieces of cultural and religious history. Just out of town is Johnston Castle, which overlooks a lake and has some magnificent grounds. The entrance fee is fairly cheap. If you’re in for a day at the beach, head up to Curracloe Beach, or travel south and follow the road toward Waterford. There are many small outlooks and bathing areas and beaches along the southern coastline of Ireland.
