Hattingen, Germany, is located in the west of the country, around eighty kilometres from the Dutch border. It is part of the Ruhr region (in German, Ruhrgebiet) in North Rhine-Westphalia. The area is a cluster of bigger industrial or former industrial cities such as Essen, Oberhausen, and Duisburg. Steel and coal were responsible for growth and wealth in the region for decades. It was also in the centre of the economic miracle in Germany after World War II. However, the times changed and the demand for coal and steel decreased from the mid-twentieth century onward. A shift to service industries and high technologies was necessary, but nevertheless some of the cities still struggle.

Compared to the neighbouring big cities, Hattingen is rather small and quiet. Around fifty-five thousand people live in the town. The history of Hattingen dates back to the fourteenth century. It is well known for its well-preserved historic centre boasting beautiful timber-framed houses; there are around one hundred fifty of these picturesque, which attract national and international tourists. The church St. George in the centre of the town, the old town hall, and the so-called “Bügeleisenhaus“ (literally, flat iron house in English) are among the worth-seeing buildings in the town. The nickname “flat iron house” was inspired by the unique shape of the building, which was built centuries ago and nowadays houses a museum. The nearby Ruhr Valley is an excellent option for a walk or a bicycle tour.

Hattingen is not a very touristic place and is comparatively small. However, it can be used as a gateway to discover the Ruhr region, the biggest urban area in Germany. You can choose from a couple of hotels and guesthouses. Currently, there is a Hattingen, Germany hostel option available as well.
