It is well known for its well-preserved historic centre boasting beautiful timber-framed houses; there are around one hundred fifty of these picturesque, which attract national and international tourists. The church St. George in the centre of the town, the old town hall, and the so-called “Bügeleisenhaus“ (literally, flat iron house in English) are among the worth-seeing buildings in the town. The nickname “flat iron house” was inspired by the unique shape of the building, which was built centuries ago and nowadays houses a museum. The nearby Ruhr Valley is an excellent option for a walk or a bicycle tour.

Hattingen is not a very touristic place and is comparatively small. However, it can be used as a gateway to discover the Ruhr region, the biggest urban area in Germany.
