A small mountain city, Kang Ding is the capital of the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in southwestern China. As part of a traditional Tibetan region, Kang Ding is known as the entrance to the Tibetan world. It is the largest city in Western Sichuan, but is famously a tranquil place, very different from the other overcrowded and polluted cities in China.
Kang Ding is a beautiful city; as it is so close to the rugged Tibetan mountains, there are stunning alpine views waiting to be discovered by eager, adventurous travelers. Hikers, climbers and bikers will find this destination the perfect one for their outdoors activities, as it provides a selection of terrains to explore. Trekkers come from all over every summer to enjoy the climate.
However, even if hiking is not quite your style, you will find much to amuse you during a visit to Kang Ding. You can still enjoy the snowy peaks and go up the mountainside by cable car, or you can take advantage of the relaxing atmosphere of the city, indulging in the natural hot springs. There is also the Tibetan culture to soak up - there are four Tibetan Buddhist Monasteries in town, so take the chance to visit the ornate temples and to learn more about the religion and history of the city.
Hostels here in Kang Ding are not expensive, but will dedicate themselves to ensuring you have an immersive and enjoyable experience. Most hostels are family run and provide traditional style dormitory accommodation. They are used to travelers and backpackers, and so will know what activities and sites to recommend. Be careful when you book a hostel in this city, however, as despite the beauty of Kang Ding in winter, many hostels will close at this time of year.
Whether you are enjoying the frosty mountains, finding the lake Migoo Tsu, or relaxing in the warm, Kang Ding is a Chinese city different from the rest, definitely not one to miss.
