Hefei is a prefecture-level city, and the capital, of the Anhui province in eastern China. It has long been considered a backwater region, lying on the vast plains north of the Yangtze River, but today it is a sprawling industrial city. In fact, Hefei wasn’t more than a small town until right before World War II, thanks to an influx of industrial complexes and chemical plants.

The city was first settled by the Chu and Han dynasties, then later the Sui and Tang dynasties, but the modern-day city wasn’t settled until the 10th century AD’s Song dynasty. The Sanhe Town dates back to the late 3rd century BC and is a popular tourist attraction. Be sure to visit the Memorial Temple of Lord Bao, an Anhui cultural site.

The international airport here, Hefei Xinqiao International Airport, sees quite a bit of actual international traffic, mainly from places in Southeast Asia, Japan, and Korea. To get from the airport into the city centre, all you need to do is catch a bus or train.

Budget accommodation in Hefei is pretty much non-existent. There are few to no hostels in town, so instead of a hostel you are better off seeking out a guesthouse or inexpensive hotel. You can ask the tourist information at the airport or train station about a hostel when you arrive, the word for hostel in Chinese is pronounced “su-she.”

Once your accommodation is sorted, then you can explore the town. There is little of major interest here beyond the old sites. You can visit the Baohe Village or the Xiaoyaojin Park, which is a site from the Battle of the Three Kingdoms. The botanical gardens are nice too, if you would like to take a walk around the city. Anhui culture is strong here, and there is no better way to learn about it than by watching a Lu Opera. This opera style formed during the Qing dynasty and is different from the Kun Opera of the Kunshan city.
