Lead Cove is situated along the northern coastline on Highway 80 of the Avalon Peninsula; there are some gorgeous ocean and landscape views along the way. The hostels in Lead Cove offer a serene environment from which to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The region is not readily accessible, however, unless you have a car, as the towns around the area do not have much in the way of large-scale amenities. There are some food shops within the local region, but you would have to ask at your Lead Cove hostel as to where the closest of them to the hostel is located.
At the tip of this part of the Avalon Peninsula is the Baccalieu Island Park Reserve, one of the largest bird sanctuaries in the country; it can be observed from a hiking trail out of Red Head Cove. On the highway up through to Lead Cove, you may take one of two roads. One passes the town of Harbour Grace, which has a statue and an airplane erected in a park to honour Amelia Earhart's journey as the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. There is also a local carrier boat that has gone adrift and landed on an island in the middle of the river here that can be observed from the same park. The visitor center is also located here.
On the other road to Lead Cove, you will find the town of Dildo, arguable one of the funniest names for a town ever, and sure to make people giggle when they hear it. A must do is to stop in the town and go and have your photograph taken with Captain Dildo in his yellow coat outside of the one of the gift shops in town.
