Zell am See is the capital of the district of the same name in the region of Salzburg in Austria. The town works as a transportation hub for the region and is an important tourist destination during both summer and winter, known as Zell am See-Kaprun.
The city is located around ninety kilometres south from the city of Salzburg (where you will also find the closest international airport), and can therefore be easily reached by train or bus. In the summer, it is a popular spot for hikers, cyclists, and water sports enthusiasts; the winters are mostly reserved for skiers and snowboarders -- particularly popular slopes are on the mountains Kitzsteinhorn and Schmittenhöhe.
Besides that, there are a couple of interesting attractions in the region that can be visited almost any time of the year, like the Kaprun Castle; City Museum; Eisriesenwelt Ice Caves; and the highest waterfall in Austria, Krimml Waterfalls. And in case you get bored, you can always visit Hallein (famous for its salt mine), and the music city of Salzburg, both of which are located a rather short drive away. There is a special Zell am See-Kaprun Summer Card, which gives you free or discounted access to public transport and various facilities, but it can only be obtained by staying in one of the many selected places and can not be purchased separately. Don't expect to find plenty of Zell am See hostel options, however, because the accommodation sector is pretty much dominated by hotels, apartments, and guesthouses.
