Tennant Creek, in the center of the Northern Territory in Australia, is most known for being almost midway between Alice Springs and Darwin -- the main city in the Northern Territory -- which makes it a good place to stop if you are coming from the east coast to any of these two destinations.
The town was created during the gold rush in Australia and nowadays it has some attractions nearby that are worth a visit. In town, ask for Lake Mary Ann, which has nature walks and where swimming is allowed -- without crocodiles or dangerous animals -- and if you want, is also an excellent spot for a picnic in shadow during the hot days. If you want to know a little bit more about the aboriginal people, explore the Nyinkka Nyunya Aboriginal Art and Cultural Centre -- you'll find a lot of knowledge about natural flora and medicine specimens, dance performances, an art gallery, and a lot about the aboriginal history. The place is owned and run by aboriginal people, so they can explain you a lot about their roots and inheritance. Not far, in the south, you will also find the Devil Marbles, a strange rock formation that seem to defy gravity.
The town is easily reached by bus, as all the national coaches going to or from Alice Springs or Darwin to the east coast stop here. By car, it's a long distance from every big town -- the nearest, Alice Springs, is just over five hundred kilometers away -- but an easy drive on roads from the east (Mount Isa or Townsville), the north (Darwin), or south (Alice Springs).
There are only a few hostels in Tennant Creek and although they are quite cheap, there aren't many tourists around this area. This is a good place to get to know life in Australia's outback, meet the locals and discover their lifestyle -- the best way is to grab a beer in the most known local bar. Tennant Creek's hostels are the best places to ask about the area, so don't miss the opportunity.
