Canillo is a town situated in the parish of the same name in Andorra, the biggest microstate of Europe located in the Eastern Pyrenees, between Spain and France. It is a town of excellent central location. While it it close to the hiking and skiing hubs of Soldieu and El Tarter, it is in easy reach of the capital as well as the Western part of the country with its most challenging hikes. Moreover, there is a gondola operating in the town connecting it to the skiing resort of Grandvalira.
Arriving in Canillo is quite easy by taking a bus from Andorra la Vella, but if you are hoping to explore the area, it might be a good idea to get your own transportation, as that gives you access to the most beautiful parts of the country that are not accessible by buses.
Staying in Canillo, you can have a good mix of cultural and natural sights. If you are here, you should definitely not miss a visit to the 12th century ruins of the church of San Joan de Caselles, which was built in a characteristic Romanesque style. You also ave some amazing hiking right on your doorstep in the Parc Natural de la Vall de Sorteny.
Moreover, if you are a winter sports fan, you will love this area too, as it boasts with 89 kilometers of ski slopes, altogether featuring a track for everybody's taste from easy to more difficult ones.
While Canillo does not have its own hostel, the hostel in El Tarter is literally only a five minute drive from here. However, if you are intent on staying on the spot, you will find hotels here for everybody's budget, from small family-run places to more luxurious complexes. Yet another option might be basing yourself in the capital and staying in the budget hostel there and taking the bus here every day.
