City Hostel Seattle

The Review

City Hostel Seattle is located in a historic building in Belltown, only ten minutes northwest of Seattle's city center. Belltown is a cool, safe area, with some iconic eateries and venues, like Shiro's Sushi (famous protege from the documentary "Jiro Dreams of Sushi"), and The Crocodile for live music. The hostel has three levels, and a mixture of different sized dorms and private rooms. Breakfast is included, as is free Wi-Fi, and there's a nonsmoking courtyard, and a theatre in the basement.

The Location

The hostel is in an excellent location, with easy access to all that downtown has to offer, amidst a great bohemian vibe. You can walk to the famous Pike Place Market and waterfront in ten minutes, and it's a twenty-minute walk to the Seattle Center (where you'll find the Space Needle, EMP Museum, and Chihuly Garden and Glass). In fact, you can actually see the Space Needle from the front of the hostel. It's actually a lot nicer to stay here than right in the center of downtown. You can easily walk past the building, as it blends into the surroundings, so look out for the red chairs on the sidewalk. Security is great -- the front door can only be opened with your room card. Reception is open twenty-four hours. When you first arrive the desk staff will see you waiting and check you in.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Bathrooms are clearly marked by a green door. There are so many bathrooms that you shouldn't have to wait at all to use one. They are clean and modern. Dorms are more old school and can get a bit stuffy, so open your window during the day; older buildings like this one don't tend to be as well ventilated as more modern places. Some dorms have en suites. All of the rooms are painted by a local Seattle artist, so they're all unique, and you can read about the artist on the door of each room. The beds are comfortable. Housekeeping will stop by late morning to freshen up the room. Lockers and hand basins are in each room. You can rent a towel if you need one.

Common Spaces

Everything you could need in a hostel is here. The kitchen and dining areas are a bit small for the amount of people, but still very good. The staff even wash your dishes for you! Just remember not to be a jerk and rinse everything before placing it into the tub for washing. An ATM is in the dining area, which is super handy. You'll find a self-service laundry downstairs that you can pay to use. The hostel tries to make this place more sociable by putting on open-mic nights and movie nights, but it's pretty chilled out here, and not a party hostel.

City Hostel is a great place to base yourself for a trip to Seattle. It's easy and hassle-free, and in a great location. Overall City Hostel is well priced, low key, and central. It doesn't seem like they help organise tours, but staff tend to recommend places that the locals like, and that's what you want.

Extremely well run. Great Managers (Natalia, Carrie Ann & Noah). Clean
Managers Natalia, Carrie Ann, Noah Rock really hard. Really nice people with huge smiles. The hostel is clean, quite a few work trade employees from around the world, relatively quiet, take the Westlake Light Rail Depot if coming from the airport. Close to Whole Foods. Lots of inexpensive bikes to rent in Seattle, I recommend lime.
Great Hostel; great location
The staff is very professional and with the combination of the location; there isn't anything bad I can say about this Hostel. Highly recommended.

Great walking distance to famous attractions
It was in great location as you can walk to all of the attractions within 10-20 minutes. Very friendly staff who were happy to help with anything. Nice selection of breakfast. Comfy beds and good selection of people in the bunks.

Great place to stay, would return
Free breakfast, friendly staff, a movie room and books. Plenty of toilets and showers, rooms are basic but comfortable. There are lockers to put your things into. Really handy location for walking around. I would definitely be happy to stay here again.

Excellent stay -- rivals any great European hostel.
My husband and I have traveled Europe extensively and enjoy the friendly/community aspect hostel stays add to our trip. This was our first experience in an American hostel, and greatly enjoyed it! Very European feeling. The location is phenomenal -- couldn't have been better. Very friendly staff and clean rooms. Bathrooms have been recently remodeled, are private and very clean. There is no central heat/air, but we stayed in July and it was still very comfortable with just an open window and a fan (provided by the hostel). Would definitely stay again -- and look forward to!
