Palermo Art Hostel is a big hostel that attracts a mixture of tourists and Uruguayans. It has options for both short- and long-term stays, and has a rooftop terrace perfect for nursing a hangover -- or getting that hangover in the first place! The Location It is located in the Palermo area of Montevideo, halfway between the centre and the beach, but some distance from the bus station, as are all the hostels in Montevideo. It's a decent location that can seem very quiet at times, mainly due to the fact that it's largely a neighbourhood area. A walk to the beach takes about ten minutes, which can't be a bad thing. Rooms and Bathrooms Dorms are very large with high ceilings, normally accommodating between six and eight people. Beds have plenty of storage space underneath for storing possessions. Some of the rooms have a lack of ventilation, which can make them quite claustrophobic in the summer months. There are only a few bathrooms; these are the smallest of all the rooms, but are kept in good condition. Common Spaces There are plenty of common spaces with two kitchens, two bathrooms, a large lounge/bar/pool area downstairs, and the rooftop terrace. There is also normally a contingency of people chatting outside and by reception. It is a very friendly hostel where there normally is a gaggle of people eager to chat. As the rooftop terrace is open to anyone, this is also a really good place to meet people. Summary This is a more than competent hostel. It seems to have found a good blend of clients, with a mixture of Uruguayans, Brazilians, Europeans, and North Americans. With plenty of places to relax or to chat in the hostel, this is a good place to meet people and share customs.
