Loki Backpackers La Paz

The Hostelz.com Review

Loki Backpackers La Paz is located in an old, seven-story hotel, and is a great choice for anyone looking to meet people and party. It's not set up for the budget traveler, however.

The Location

This hostel is centrally located, not far from the bus station, Witches Market, and the cable car. The hostel is right by Plaza Alonzo de Mendoza. From there, walk ten metres or so up Avenida America and you will see it on your right behind white steel doors.

Rooms and Bathrooms

All rooms here have private bathrooms and a good amount of space. It looks like the hostel is in an old hotel building, and rooms are set out over floors two to six, with privates on the lower floors. Except for floor six, the rooms are the only things on each floor. The beds are comfortable and the bedding is warm, though some beds creak a bit. There are lockers in rooms, and the privates come set up like a hotel, with wardrobe, free water, tea, and towels.

Bathrooms are mostly smaller, and there are very few shared bathrooms for the hostel. However, the showers are always hot, the pressure is great, and the bathroom has places to hang your clothes.

Common Spaces

On the first floor, you'll find the check-in and check-out desks, as well as the travel agency. There is an elevator to take you up to the sixth floor, where you can find the ping-pong table, a couple of computers, the smoking room, and the TV room. These rooms aren't as good as their Cusco location for example, but they are still good.

A flight of stairs leads up to the bar, which has a pool table, giant Jenga set, and beer pong. They serve decent (but not amazing) food here, but the portions are smaller than you might like. The meals are typical prices for the mainly Western meals they serve. You can find cheaper outside the hostel, unless you're heading to an English pub or a nice pizzeria. There are three happy hours a day, and the bar gives away chances for free shots with every beer, as well as random drinks later at night. There's always an afternoon activity and a nightly theme or drinking game, and they play the soccer and football all afternoon. The hostel has a more inclusive feel than some others, and you can meet lots of people very easily, but it's a little less crazy.

This is a great choice for anyone who wants to make lots of friends and party. The hostel is set up so that you can put everything you want on a tab and never have to leave the building, but for a budget traveler this is pretty dangerous. This hostel isn't set in as nice a building but has better views than some others. It doesn't get as crazy as some others, but in every way is better for meeting people and it has a better atmosphere.

Hostelz.com Guest Reviews

There are many great things about Loki -- it's extremely clean and there are fantastic facilities, such as the free internet and bar. The hostel mainly attracts party goers which is great for those who enjoy the nightlife. Location Loki hostels always have a prime location. Loki La Paz is the revamped Hotel Viena, located in the centre of town. Shops, dry cleaners, and other useful amenities are just around the corner. Rooms and Bathrooms Huge airy rooms and extremely comfy beds with the luxury of a duvet to nurse your hangover in. They have great, huge bathrooms equipped with shower and toilet -- but it can be a bit annoying if you want to nip to the toilet and people are showering in them. The facilities are always clean and spotless so you can truly relax here in Loki. Common Spaces The bar is a beautiful old ballroom with cheap drinks all night. There's a large, open chill-out area on the first floor although it's a bit too open, with all the floors looking down over you. There's four computers and the wait can be fairly long as the internet is free. There's also a tourist information desk, which is really useful for booking Jungle and Amazon tours, and the famous dangerous road tour. The "highest oxygen bar in the world" is on the top floor, but don't be fooled -- many bars in La Paz make this claim. Summary You‘ll either love Loki or despise the place. Loki has all the elements of a perfect party hostel -- a huge bar and a check-out time of 1 p.m. However there's one niggling issue here -- the hostel seems to have forgotten that we're in South America. You'd never guess with English/Irish Australian staff dominating the joint -- there is the odd Latin American employee but they'll only ever be found in the bathrooms mopping the floor. There's not one trace of the local food or drink, just chips and sarnies on the menu and not one sign is in Spanish, just English. If you ever want to cut yourself out of a culture or partying is at the top of your agenda then this is the place to be. If you want to experience real Bolivia, then stay well away.

Great in most ways, some flaws though
This hostel has a good location, and helpful and friendly English-speaking staff. They let me check in and sleep immediately though I arrived at 8 a.m. It has free Internet and Wi-Fi, and twenty-four-hour hot water, which in Bolivia cannot be taken for granted. The beds are clean and comfortable, and there is a good crowd. The cafe/bar is a good place to snack, and the food, though more expensive than on the street, isn't outrageous. It's not perfect, however, because the music in the bar is much, much too loud for anything except dancing after about 8 p.m., and some of the dorms are not well insulated from other dorms, so when you're trying to get to sleep you hear people talking loudly in the next room. Overall, though, I had a great time here and would certainly recommend it.
Nice atmosphere, great venue
Great hostel to hang out, big enough to be unwary of the music at the cool bar. Great bacon sandwich available with breakfast and good dinner options. Best hostel in Bolivia, no doubts.
This is a great hostel. The beds are comfy the staff are friendly and the bar is great. Showers are great when hot. I was here for eight days and enjoyed every one of them. The bar staff here have a very generous pour so enjoy.
