Menaggio Youth Hostel

The Review

La Primula Menaggio Youth Hostel Lake Como is a fantastic hostel with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere; it is suitable for both families and a younger crowd. The hostel is managed and run by former guests and volunteers working for free board and food -- this gives it a unique atmosphere. The staff vary from incredibly helpful and friendly to disorganised and verging on rude, but they’ll still join you for a drink in the bar in the evening. On top of this, the hostel offers fantastic cheap food and gorgeous views over the lake. The hostel also offers a wide variety of activities such as kayaking, sailing, climbing, and Italian cooking classes. This hostel is extremely reasonably priced compared to other accommodation in Lake Como -- it is the only place which allows people on a budget to access the wonders of Lake Como.

The Location

La Primula is situated in Menaggio, on the western shores of the lake, in the perfect position for visiting the other towns on the lake by either boat or bus. The town of Menaggio is a beautiful, bustling town and it's easy to get to with a regular bus service from Como. Take the C10 bus from either Como Lago or Como San Giovanni train stations. Ask to stop at the Grand Hotel Menaggio, cross the road and walk back in the direction the bus came from. The hostel is up a ramp which runs parallel to the road, about two hundred meters from the hotel.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel offers private rooms with ensuite bathrooms. They have twin and triple rooms or family rooms, which sleep four, five, or six people. They also offer a very cheap rate for a dormitory, which has shared bathrooms. To stay at the hostel, you must be a member of Hosteling International (nonmembers are charged an extra fee per night). The rooms are clean and comfortable -- some have amazing lake views. There are free lockers and free linen available. The bathrooms are fairly clean but have an inconsistent hot water supply. There is a washing machine available and drying areas outside.

Common Spaces

The hostel restaurant is the main common area, which is also where the reception, bar, and computers are situated. There are windows all along one wall to make good use of the fantastic view. The hostel provides a free breakfast of fresh bread, jam, tea, coffee, and juice. You can also pay for extras such as pancakes and bacon and eggs. The restaurant also serves a reasonably priced lunch and dinner of pizza, pasta, or salads. Each evening there is also a daily special three-course meal. The food is delicious -- we would recommend eating there most nights. There are picnic benches outside if you prefer eating al fresco. The hostel also has its own private beach just two minutes’ walk away -- it is small but quiet and a great place to spend the day relaxing.

This hostel does have some downsides with no kitchen, lockout from 2 to 5 p.m. and they charge for Wi-Fi and computer use. However this hostel has an amazing price, an excellent range of activities, and a brilliant location -- which is enough for us to overlook the negatives and thoroughly recommend this hostel.

Best decision, it is a must go!
This was the best decision ever to stay here! The hostel is in a beautiful area with a spectacular view of Lake Como. The bus was easy to take and the drive was stunning along the edge of the lake so it wasn't a hassle at all. The hostel was clean and safe and the food served at the hostel was delicious. There are so many things to do from hiking to kayaking to taking the ferry across the lake. The staff is so intelligent and helpful and took the time to sit with us and figure out our next step of our trip and the best/cheapest way to get there. They told us about local secrets in the area so we got to explore more than we had planned, which was amazing. We had a great experience here and highly recommend it to anyone.

La Primula youth hostel is part of Menaggio's history: originally run by Tai and his family (who are now serving five star dinners a few kilometers South), it's been run for the last five seasons by Fabio and his crew. It is located over the main road, so it is easy to reach but it also has a breathtaking lake view. The bedrooms can accommodate from four to eight people on bunk beds: there are no keys for the dormitories, but there are lockers: you may want to bring your own lock, though, because they don't give them for free. The price for a locker is really good anyway. If your group books an entire dormitory, you will have one key for the whole group. If you'd like, you can have two bunk beds attached so as to have a double bed, but you need to ask in advance. The bathrooms are tiny, especially the toilets, but they are cleaned every day after breakfast so they are usually in good conditions, but I'd rather shower in the morning. A basic continental breakfast is served from 8:00 to 9:30: it's not luxury, but you get fresh bread, orange juice, tea, coffee, jam, butter, chocolate spread. And you can order pancakes or eggs and bacon for a reasonable extra. There is no self-kitchen because the hostel has a restaurant service: there is a daily menu or you can order something different. The daily menu is really very affordable and they always have a vegetarian option upon request. Food is not fantastic but for that price it's a real treat, and when the chef is inspired you can really have a gourmet dinner! Dinner is served in the common area, that is a room with big windows and a view, and a yard also with a view. They have the social table for people who want to meet other travelers, and there is always a very friendly environment, music playing and people chatting. The staff vary yearly but Fabio really knows how to hire the best people on the market, because in the last three years I have never met a grumpy receptionist! There is usually some activity, such as table football tournaments or beerpong. They have a private beach on the opposite side of the road, and they rent out bicycles (not great ones) and kayaks (ok); they also have cooking classes, Italian classes, and sailing classes, further than the several activities that they can suggest. There are beautiful hikes in the area, and if you have time you can visit the other lake villages: ask the staff, they always know! I strongly recommend La Primula youth hostel if you want to meet cool people and the in a laid back yet fun environment. If you are a family, I suggest that you don't ask for a lake view, because your room will be just above the yard, where guests usually hang out until late. If you are a lone traveler, this is the perfect place for you.
Location! Location! Location!
This hostel is all about location. Situated a stone's throw from the banks of the lake and a short stroll from a supermarket and the ferry terminal. Lake Como is incredible and you will want to stay somewhere central to see all the area. Menaggio Youth Hostel is that place. Superbly located away from the main town of Como. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. The room, although small had uninterrupted views of the lake. Very beautiful. The food served at the hostel is nice, but not incredible and the showers were dirty and had poor water pressure. Besides these few first world problems I enjoyed my stay at this hostel.

Great hostel! Beautiful location
We had stayed here in May and June 2005. It was the last leg of our trip and we wish we had more time here. The Como region is beautiful and this hostel is situated right next to the lake. We had a great view and some memorable breakfasts and dinners. We had taken a private room for four of us. So privacy was not an issue. Staff were very friendly and allowed us to heat/microwave food. Great experience over all. Great value for money experience. Loved the villages around Lake Como.
We stayed two nights at this hostel while visiting Lago di Como. We decided that we wanted to go hiking in the pre-Alps and the staff was more than willing to recommend a hike. They were friendly and accommodating -- our train left Como at 7 .a.m and they told us we could get breakfast from them the night before. The food was also great -- we had dinner there one night, some of us ate there both nights. It is very easy to find and has a great view. Rooms and bathrooms were clean. Sheets were also free of stains and mess. Lockout at midnight was somewhat of an issue for us. they really close the place down so don't be late. Also, my friends rented bikes from the hostel and they broke half way around the lake. The guy who runs the place was angry that he had to go pick them up. I would suggest finding an alternative place to rent sports stuff.
Stayed at La Primula yesterday. Lockout policy drove me out of this place today -- its a very quiet hostel, good for relaxing and catching up on your sleep so long as you go to bed early -- no sleep-ins here. The evening meal is set at 12 euro, and dont bother with the breakfast -- coffee which was alright, but a croissant out of a packet? Best to wander down to the local cafes instead. Location was brilliant, and the girl about twenty-five that works there was fantastically helpful.
Beautiful location! Enjoy the terrace on the second floor with stunning lake and mountain views. Dinners are good and filling. The waterfall hike takes you up into the foothills and along a river past old mills and farms, etc. A beach just below the hostel is a great place to take a dip in the afternoons. The hostel is fairly clean, but the coed bathroom facilities could be improved (the shower curtains don't offer much privacy and it's a bit mildewed).Staff are multi-lingual, friendly and helpful. I'll be back!
There are a few hostels in the Como lake area in Northern Italy and La Primula is the best option because it is located in the middle portion of the lake shores. At 15 miles from Lugano, Switzerland, it offers excellent hiking and mountain climbing alternatives, beyond nice ferry trips to other villages around the lake. Though it is an HI hostel, the management is not such class A as HI advocates. There is a lack of personnel and employees are always busy, which results in a poor service to visitors. Also, as it is common practice in Italian hostels, the hostel is closed from 10 AM to 4 PM and no entrance is allowed in this period and there is a curfew. The rooms are not big, since the estate is a villa adapted to be a hostel, but there is a sink with a mirror in each room, which are very useful. Linen and towels are available at a cost. The hostel is in the slopes of a hill and has a nice porch on the first and on the second floor, opening to the lake with a great view. It has several games available for guests and offers Internet (but at a high price). This hostel has a very informal atmosphere with music playing all the time. Breakfast is accompanied with opera and meals with jazz. There is no kitchen but this is compensated by the excellent meals which are offered at a reasonable price, with drinks included. Only a freezer and a microwave oven are available for guests; however the nearest supermarket did not have any microwave food for sale. Breakfast is included, consisting of coffee or chocolate with bread and butter under an eat as much as you can basis. Showers are collective for both sexes, with no doors (only vinyl curtains) and it is difficult or even impossible to have some privacy during your bath. Nature is the great value of this hostel and no guests should be worried about staying inside the hostel with so much to do outside, especially because the nearest hostel (Como) is located in town without any remarkable attractions.
