Blue Wren Travellers Rest Hostel feels like home. Actually it is a home. The hostel owner and his dog live in the same house and share the kitchen with the guests. There's place only for twenty people, so you pretty much get to know everyone.
The owner is a bit of a hippie and into enlightenment. He likes to play guitar and listen to Chinese chants. The dog is friendly but stinks. The household is run ecologically -- rainwater gets collected in a container system for later use, rubbish is recycled, water is solar-heated, and food scraps are fed to chooks living underneath the house.
The Location
Denmark is a charming little town surrounded by many wineries. The hostel is easily accessible either by car or bus. There is an off-street parking available and the bus stop is only fifty meters away.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The Blue Wren has a twin, a double, a family room, and two six-bed dorms. Rooms are big, clean, and nicely decorated. The dorms also have a small balcony. The only thing missing from the dorms is some individual lighting. The linen and bedding are free of charge, but a word of warning -- the mattresses are very soft. Altogether there are three toilets and three showers -- all very clean and modern and the water for the showers is solar-heated!
This isn't much of a party hostel -- it's very quiet in general. It's just the chants that might start to annoy after a while. Another thing is the pipe-system that gathers the rainwater -- it makes a lot of noise when it's raining and the water runs through the pipes into the container.
Common Spaces
Even though the hostel is very small, it has a laundry room, kitchen, dining area, TV room, a computer in the hallwa, and an outside sitting area. The YHA Blue Wren Travellers Rest has a cozy and welcoming feeling. The hostel owner likes to dine with the guests and have a chat with everybody.
Summary
Both the hostel and the town of Denmark have a nice vibe. Blue Wren is the ideal place to spend the night in budget accommodation in Denmark when touring in the area. It's a modern, clean, warm, and well-run hostel -- recommended!
Small, quiet and friendly
A small hostel that has a very homey feel to it. Draws a quiet crowd, so that your pretty much guaranteed a good night sleep. Well equipped kitchen and clean facilities, friendly manager. Not much going on here, if your looking for action but it is worth a stay if you just want to rest up and reorganize.
Happy
staying in the hostel was like staying at home. nice, quiet, relaxing. nice staff -- very helpful and friendly!
Pretty good place to crash for a few days. It's just like being at home in mum's kitchen. There's not much to do here, so just kick back and relax.
A delightful home away from home. Don't expect wild parties. Do expect a sociable atmosphere, scrupulously clean hostel and dorms, an extremely friendly, helpful host and a gorgeous if ridiculously lazy Labrador dog (Flint) that enchants the guests.
