Gaudys Backpackers has been operating for more than 15 years and has been voted one of the best hostels in Costa Rica more than once. While it is still a great and quite affordable place to stay, if it wants to keep up with its top reputation it should improve the sleeping area.
The Location
Gaudys is located three blocks east of Parque La Sabana, the biggest urban park in the country. Paso Colon, the area where most bus stations are located, is a 15 minute walk. The hostel has a big sign outside and it is easy to find. While the area is not the nicest or the best location for nightlife, it offers enough restaurants and bars for every taste.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are private rooms for two, three and four people with ensuite bathrooms and three eight-bed dorms, one of which has an ensuite bathroom. There are three common bathrooms with hot showers. The bathrooms are small but clean. Some mattresses in the basic dorm are old and thin, not as good as the others, and some are squeaky. Also, there is not much space for the luggage near the beds. Lockers are available.
Most of the rates include breakfast (pancakes, fruits, tea, and coffee), which is available only from 7.30 to 8.30.
Common Spaces
The house is big, on two levels, and beautifully built. The lounge area is big, there are two gardens, and a playroom with a computer and a billiards table. Also available is a big tv with satellite channels and a book exchange. The Wi-Fi connection is fast and works well all around the house.
There is a laundry service available for a cost.
The kitchen corner is a bit small. Free tee and coffee are available all day. The tap water is safe to drink.
Staff is composed of locals who speak good English. They are helpful and respectful, and can provide transfers and offer different tours around the country. The reception is open 24 hours, but the common areas must be quiet by 10pm. This is definitely not a party hostel.
Gaudys Backpackers is a clean and secure hostel; there are security cameras in the common areas.
Sunmary
Hostel competition is fierce in San Josè, but Gaudys, while not the most modern and vibrant place, is still one of the best options, with a great quality/price ratio.

The best hostel in San Jose, Costa Rica. Right in the main street of downtown San Jose and very close to the airport and main bus stations for buses going to the beaches.
We offer different types of room such as singles, doubles and dorms. You'll get free internet 24/7, Wi-Fi zone, free coffee and tea all day. Kitchen facilities, TV room with cable TV, books to read in your free time, free security boxes, free storage room, hot showers, linen included, hammocks to relax in our garden, all within a very clean and lovely house! The prices are from $11 in dormitories and from $25 in privates or double rooms!
We provide transport to and from the airport at a rate lower than that of regular taxis. $20 per 1,2 or 3 people.
We offer tours to volcanoes, beaches, canopy,rafting,waterfalls and much more with the lowest rates!
Come here and feel like at home in a very familiar environment! Get to meet other travellers as well as our very nice and bilingual staff!
Our staff is available to you 24 hours a day and will provide you with free maps, bus schedules and other info!
