Inka's Rest B&B

The Review

Inka's Rest B&B is a cute little hostel nestled on a quiet street in the otherwise busy Puno.

The Location

It's a short taxi ride or just over a kilometre of walking from the various bus stations and the port in Puno. It's located down a quiet residential street slightly off the main road, which makes it easy to find, but makes it feel safer and it's more quiet. It's only a couple of seconds' walk to the main road though, which will lead you to a gigantic supermarket in less than five minutes and to the port/lake in about twenty minutes. Banks, restaurants, shops, the post office, and the Main Square with the Cathedral are a short walk away behind the hostel -- in the opposite direction of the lake. There's one Main Street leading off the Main Square that's pedestrianised, where you can find most touristic amenities, souvenir shops, and decent restaurants. Overall, Inka's Rest is in an ideal location for all the local attractions!

Rooms and Bathrooms

This hostel attracts mainly travelers heading deeper into Peru or to the Bolivian border via Lake Titicaca.
The rooms are nice, clean, and comfortable with thick bedding for the cold nights. Space is limited in the rooms and it gets crowded with travelers' large bags very quickly. Plug sockets are limited and/or not close to most beds and the windows are thin so it does feel cold in the rooms. Rooms lock using a key, which is left in the door at all times, but it's a noisy locking system so every time someone opens the door there's a lot of key/lock noise.

There are three large bathrooms, which have toilets and large showers with hot water. Other singular toilets are available downstairs near the communal areas. They're clean and the soap is always full and there's plenty of toilet roll, which is regularly replenished.

Common Spaces

The reception is clean and spacious, with hot water and tea cups readily available to make yourself a complementary coca or other flavoured teas. The kitchen, where free breakfast is served, is spacious and clean enough for cooking. It does get busy around 8 p.m., when the staff start prepping for breakfast. It's an open-plan room, which contains the kitchen and a large dining area with nice, colourful tables for two to four people. The last section is full of sofas and bean bags pointed toward the television, which is constantly playing films such as "Now You See Me" or "Harry Potter."

Inka's Rest B&B is a lovely hostel with an included, decent free breakfast, which starts at 6 a.m., which is perfect as most buses depart from Puno early and the Lake Titicaca day trips start any time from 7 a.m. There's a book exchange and the staff are helpful -- although some only speak Spanish and the atmosphere is nice and relaxed. They sell water/beer/snacks at the hostel; provide maps; and there's a buzzer-camera-entry system in use twenty-four hours a day, which makes it feel very safe.

Good hostel
comfortable beds, nice communal areas, good location.

Friendly staff, cosy hostel, a little disorganised
I only spent one night at inka's rest as a stop over but a few things stood out. Firstly the good. the staff were very friendly and the hostel has a warm cosy atmosphere with multiple relaxing common areas. The location is fairly good only a few minutes walk to central restaurant area and a few more to the Lake. The price was also very reasonable. The not so good. The hostel was a bit dysfunctional and disorganised. I booked 2 months in advance and yet was put in an all girls dorm because they had no other beds available. There were random things seeming to be stored in halls and walk areas. The second toilet was also a bit gross and crudely constructed/kept. all in all it was ok but needs some work and if you were there for a few days/week it could get frustrating.
Good location, really friendly staff
The location was spot on, just a stone throw away from the cathedral and central town. The staff were great, really friendly with big smiles. The accommodation itself is rather basic, but very comfortable. It's all in the name, this is a good place to relax.

I had an incredible time at Inkas Rest. The people running the place are incredibly nice and worked hard to make sure we had a good stay (more so than any other hostel). They were willing to make recommendations based on what we wanted to do, tailoring our experience to our goals. Great hostel, come here if you go to Puno!

Looked nice but owner/manager was rude
From the time I arrived the owner/manager was extremely rude and pretentious. He also wouldn't give me a price until I'd given my passport and name. When he did give me a price (25 sols) it was more than was advertised on the internet (20 sols) and when I asked about it he said, for you, now it's 30 sols. he also said he doesn't care because he has the beds full and his whole attitude was horrible. So I ended up not staying as service is very important to me and he was plainly not interested in having me as a guest. The place looked nice enough with good facilities but there is no excuse for poor service. Someone else I knew arrived shortly after me and had the same experience. I ended up finding a gorgeous hostel for 15 sols!
Wonderful Hostal. Clean, hot water, ample dormitories. A great breakfast, bread, butter, jam, fruits, coffee. Very good price so it is offered, in no other Inn obtains everything what they give by so low price. Internet and Wi-Fi free, of 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Alfredo and Gilda always helping in all including for the Tours and passages. The truth is incredible, I do not have words.
Inka's Rest is the perfect destination for backpackers who are visiting Puno, the gateway town to Lake Titicaca in Peru. Managed by Gilda and Alfredo, a lovely couple, the hostel is a luxurious place to stay in this small town. The Location Located just five minutes' walking distance from the main plaza and the tourist streets, Inka's Rest is very centrally located. A five-minute taxi ride can get you to the bus terminal as well as the boat terminal. When you reach Puno by bus, the taxi drivers may try to tell you that Inka's Rest is not a good option for staying and direct you to other hotels. However, do not listen to them. Mention that your reservation is already made and you have to go to Inka's Rest. Rooms and Bathrooms Inka's Rest has four-bed dorms, single private roomsn and double private rooms. The rooms are beautifully lit with paintings on the walls, making it extremely homey. Every set of rooms has a common room, equipped with comfortable couches, a television, DVD player, and free coffee/tea all day. Every traveler is given a set of keys to the private room, the common room, and the main door, so it is highly secure. The common bathrooms/showers are found on every floor and give hot water all day. They are in extremely clean condition thanks to the regular housekeeping by the management of Inka's Rest. Common Spaces Breakfast is served in the huge common room in the ground floor from 6 a.m. onward. Bread, fruits, lovely Peruvian coffee, or Coca tea help you jump start your day. The common room is also equipped with one computer, where internet is free. There is Wi-Fi for those who are carrying their own laptop that is available from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The kitchen is free to use on the second floor, in case you want to cook. Other facilities include book exchange, laundry facility, and tourist information facility. You can book the tours for Lake Titcaca from the reception of Inka's Rest. Gilda and Alfredo help you select the best option according to your needs and can also help you book bus tickets to other destinations in Peru or Bolivia. One big advantage of this hostel is the owners, who speak fluent English and have contacts ranging from the Immigration office to the tourist health clinic. You do not have to worry if you are stuck with altitude sickness -- the owners will take care of you in a warm manner. Summary Inka's Rest is every backpacker's choice in Puno and it always has many travelers, thanks to the homey atmosphere created by Gilda and Alfredo. It is a warm and friendly place to make a pit stop. Even with so many backpackers, the place has a personal touch and hence, you will end up making many friends in this hostel.
