Best Stay in Dunedin
My Stay At penny's was the best ever during my stay in Dunedin. the staff are helpful and the facilities are adequate for the price, which is the cheapest in Dunedin. i enjoyed playing on the Xbox that is available in the lounge all though they need more video games. i enjoyed the Free breakfasts in the mornings was a good thing for this hostel.

I realise that this is budget accommodation and as such was happy with facilities -- the bed was clean and I had everything I needed in my room. I knew I was sharing bathroom facilities, but I'm not sure how often they were cleaned (there always seemed to be urine on the floor). But my big gripe was the NOISE. Although signs ask for quiet after a certain time I was kept awake until all hours with drunken youths in rooms and corridors (until 4.30am on the Saturday night). I feel it should either be advertised as student backpackers or management should make sure that noise rules are obeyed. It should not be up to paying guests to ask for quiet and then get verbal abuse for the effort!

Great Location
Handy to everything, really just used it to come back to sleep at so can't rate all the facilities, but for what I wanted it was great -- clean, just set far enough back from Princes St to avoid too much noise in the mornings.

Really great place to stay
Really loved staying here. Its a nice, relaxed, spacious big old refurbished building with loads of character. At 20 a night its the best value to be found in Dunedin. Close and accessible to town centre (5minute walk) and with excellent facilities. Good showers, roomy and cosy lounge and kitchen. But the best thing here was the people I met, made some cool friends here in this wicked hostel.
A little disappointed.
We found Penny's quite untidy ("dead" washing machines in laundry) and a bit grotty. The kitchen and bedding was certainly not spotlessly clean. The shower/toilet facilities weren't adequate for the number of guests -- be prepared for a wait. Heater in room broken. There was only one wash machine and dryer, which were used for all the hostel linen as well. They were pay machines and the wash machine was relatively small so one load doubled in time and price. I also got caught out by a $22 booking fee so be careful. There is a pub/nightclub downstairs though the noise didn't bother us too much. Kitchen facilities were good if you could find clean stuff, and good location a few blocks from the city center.
Penny's Backpackers is a BBH hostel in Dunedin. It's located three blocks from the Octagon, which is where all the action is, and it's within walking distance of the bus/train station too -- although the hostel does offer free pickups most of the time too. Security appears to be reasonable, with codes on the inner door (and also on the outside door after a certain hour). This is a medium-sized hostel. There are dorm rooms, and also the option of doubles and singles, with all beds being fully made up. The heating in the bedrooms could be improved a bit, but common areas are very warm, with what look to be new heaters. It appears as if improvements are being carried out all the time so hopefully they look at replacing the small and aging heaters in bedrooms in the near future. The hostel has a good-sized and spotlessly clean kitchen, decent dining area off the kitchen, and a very spacious TV room. Free internet is offered in the TV room although it does seem to be a bit hit and miss, not working some of the time. When it does work, there are three computers set aside for it, so not too much queuing time. There is a shower room and toilet, and also two bathrooms consisting of shower and toilet. These are reasonably clean, although they could do with a bit of modernisation in places. On the ground floor there is a newly refurbished and opened bar and games room. The staff in the bar are residents of the hostel that have been there for a very long time. Most are friendly, unlike in some hostels where long term residents can almost seem to resent people invading their "home." Downstairs again, there is a second bar, aptly named The Cellar, which is also recently opened. It is a small but nicely decorated and also serves food. All in all, Penny's is a hostel that has a lot going for it. Once management addresses the few remaining problems, it will be well equipped to compete with any other hostels in Dunedin. As it stands, it can still be recommended, especially during summer months when warmth is not so big a concern.
