Nomads Hostel of Veliko Tarnovo is different from a typical backpackers' hostel; it has its own, new-agey character and might not be suitable for people who like to party hard and to get drunk. For those looking for something more peaceful and elegant, it might be a preferred option.
Nomads Hostel is located on the principal street of Veliko Tarnovo's old town, Ulitsa Gurko. The street is advertised as one of the oldest streets of Bulgaria. You have a house-filled mountainside on one side of the street and dramatic views over a bend of the Yantra river on the other. There is a balcony on the first floor of the hostel, from which you can appreciate the views of the river.
Rooms and Bathrooms
You can choose between a dorm and a private room. The dorms are spacious for a hostel, and the wooden beds comfortable and sturdy, no squeaky noises at night. The bedsheets are clean and white. Overall, you'll get a good sleep and there's no shortage of personal space.
A weaker part of the experience is the bathroom. It's the shower-right-on-the bathroom floor setup (traditional to the region), and the water pressure is not very high (perhaps the hilly Veliko Tarnovo landscape is to blame here).
The common space on the first floor consists of a kitchen, a living room (a computer with internet connection can be found here), and the aforementioned balcony. In the living room there is a shelf with books and some organic items for sale. Breakfast is served here. Differently from any other hostels, breakfast at Nomads is organic, locally produced, and homemade, so it's good for your health. If you want to get even more healthy during your stay, bear in mind that one of the owners is a reiki practitioner. The common space, just like the rest of the hostel, has a cosy, homey, clean feel about it, with that new-agey twist. There's no shortage of wood and wooden things here. Note, you will need to take your shoes off in the corridor (plastic slippers are available).
Overall, Nomads is a good place to stay, and the often-present owners are friendly and helpful, even if one of them might sound a little patronising at times. The slogan states "Come as a guest leave as a friend."
wonderful view from hostel and beautiful decorations. excellent and healthy food by home made, friendly owner like your family.
Stayed there Sept 14 and 15, 2008. Everything was new and clean. Excellent Breakfast, Internet, and Location. Picked me up and dropped me off at the Train Station. The hosts were very helpful. A good experience. Try the moonshine.
Very good hostel
Excellent. The owners were helpful and honest, a perfect host. The location is great. The hostel has a fantastic view. In the price is included a very good breakfast.
Great place, very friendly
Nomads is clean, well-maintained, and up-to-date. Fedio, Maria, and Georgi are all very friendly, speak English well, and can provide lots of information about the VT area and elsewhere in Bulgaria. They're working hard to make the hostel even better than it already is. "Fedio's Oasis" (the Nomads balcony) is a great place to sit and watch the sun set over the city.
Clean and welcoming
The Hostels was very clean and the guys are really nice and helpful people. As other people said the view was the best one as possible and the breakfast (I'm vegetarian) was delicious. Very recommended for a staying in V.T.
Very clean and very welcoming
The nicest hostel we stayed in on our two-week trip around Bulgaria. Free internet and a good range of music added to the experience. The view from the hostel balcony is lovely. The staff are very welcoming and friendly, and make amazing food. It was fairly quiet when we were there (only one or two other guests) but that made it all the more relaxing.
Nomads Hostel is a great little hostel in a house on an historic street in the centre of Veliko Tarnovo. Their motto is "Come as a Guest, Leave as a Friend" and we really feel like that is how it happened for us. The atmosphere is homey and very welcoming. All the facilities you need are there -- kitchen, common room, internet access, and a good breakfast. There are guidebooks and info about the town and the area available for reference and the superbly friendly staff will give you a map when you arrive.
The view from the balcony is excellent and the location of the hostel is ideal. It's situated on a quiet street just behind the main shopping area and only a few minutes walk from the fortress. It's easy to reach from the bus or train station, but often, if you can say what time you're arriving, someone from the hostel will pick you up.
We stayed in a six-bed dorm with a bathroom attached. The dorm room and beds are comfortable and the bathroom is clean and spacious in typical Balkan style (which means no real shower cubicle, so water generally sprays everywhere -- but that's common in this part of the world!). Veliko Tarnovo is one of Bulgaria's highlights and Nomads Hostel is certainly one of Veliko Tarnovo's highlights!
