DO NOT STAY HERE! AWFUL PLACE!

DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOSTEL!!! The woman who runs it is a crook. She seems so lovely and kind at first till she let her mask slip. I only stayed there for one night and couldnt wait to leave. In the short time i was there i saw her deliberately short change people, mistreat her staff and cats. The rooms are filthy and smell so bad, they also have mould on the walls, blood and other questionable stains on the bed sheets and covers. When i asked to swap rooms to another dorm she put me in a single room and said she would charge me the same amount as the dorm because of the mould there. This room was worse than the dorm before but i didnt want to be a pain and ask to swap again. In the morning when i asked for the bill, it turns out she lied about the cost. When i questioned the price of the room she yelled at me saying it was 'only' 120 baht over the amount she told me and i should pay. Yes i know it is not a lot of money but out of principle i refused to pay as it was not what was agreed the day before. She became more angry yelling more loudly at me which eventually drove me to tears, when i became upset she laughed in my face! i still stood my ground and paid exactly what i owed and that was that. I have never in all my years traveling been treat so disgustingly by a hostel. Strongly recommend anyone thinking of staying here to look elsewhere.

Now at Baanrimtaling you can get free high speed internet 10 minutes. I like Thai cooking Class here with Maleewan. It's real Thai food it's not Thai food for Foreigner. Chiang Khong is small town, quiet, with a great view of Mekong river.

Baanrimtaling Home Stay Reviews from the Web

Staff is very nice and sweet, but some of them do not understand very much English. If your room is in the reception area remember to ask for the alternative way to the bathroom, because they close the gates between rooms and toilets between 23-07, and you can't get out. Was told in the morning about an alternative door, but would have wanted to know about this in the evening when I needed to go to the bathroom.

I was in a single room. It was older and VERY BASIC! which was expected for the price! The bathroom is partially outside but it was ok, decent water temp & pressure! This is more of a Homestay than a hostel. The staff were nice and had helpful info for guest to read. The location was ok for coming by bus and not too far to walk to a Tuk tuk to the border! There is SMALL padlock to the room... not the best security but its next to the river, PRETTY! GOOD FOR 1 night stay b4 you go to the border!

Liked: Basic guesthouse with cheap&good food as well as nice river views. Most of the people stay just one night, but they have some tips to explore countryside if you decide for it. Didn't like: One of the dorms is just under a thin floor of upstairs restaurant, so it can be pretty noisy in the evenings. Other thing - maybe nothing to dislike but consider - is that they do not offer free pick up to the ferry border crossing, as it's just don't exist any more, new bridge was opened in the end of 2013.

Liked: The owner of the hotel could not have been more helpful in assisting us to join our Mekong Cruise. She personally took us to the ferry and made sure to pass us into the care of the Cruise rep. The food was good and there were free bikes to use. The hostel operates an 'honesty system' where you have a book to record any thing you use eg food, drinks and then you make up your own bill at the end. The main selling points of the hostel are the unbelievable helpfulness of the owner and the cheap price Didn't like: No windows and poorly fitting shutters yet very poor provision of mosquito nets (ours was full of holes). Ensuite toilet didn't have a door. Poor standard of general cleanliness.

Liked: Right on the Mekong River the views are lovely. The bungalow room we had was spacious with a huge balcony over looking the river. Restaurant was ok - when busy food was good but when quiet not so much. Owners Maleewan and Don very chatty and friendly. Didn't like: Most people only stay for a night before crossing into Laos so can be very quiet. Music festival over the river kept us awake until 2am, but not a major problem for us (and think seasonal).

Liked: The staff was super friendly and they met us at the bus station, even though I didn't expect this Didn't like: The dorm rooms were under the restaurant, and since I went to bed early I could hear people walking on the wooden floor all the time.

Liked: Great location, friendly and helpful staff, and free bicycles. Didn't like: This hostel only provides 1 key per room, which if you're sharing with people you have to leave in a container on the Reception desk.

Liked: It was pitch back when I arrived in Chiang Khong but the lovely hostel owner picked me up (for free!), which was very much appreciated after a long bus ride from Chiang Mai!The rooms were basic but incredibly cheap and the atmosphere at the hostel was brilliant. Food and drink was tasty and fairly priced and the showers were hot. Finally, the view over the Mekong river into Laos in the morning was brilliant! Didn't like: N/A
