Very silent
Very silent. But we had to change the room the second night!
Hostel Galway - Sleepzone YHA is a great choice if you are going to be staying in Galway.
The Location
The hostel is located about fifteen minutes from the bus station and it is easy to find. It is located on a side street just off a main road, so it is easy to get places, but it is quiet, especially at night and it seems to be in a safe area. There are several shops, grocery stores, restaurants, bars, and a park all within walking distance (no more than ten minutes away). The hostel is also located about a ten-minute walk from the Spanish Arch and the river.
Rooms and Bathrooms
This hostel offers a variety of room types, ranging from privates to large dorms and it also caters to all sorts of travelers, from single travelers to families. The rooms are clean, but are not very spacious and have double bunk beds. Most of the rooms have a private bathroom/shower attached. The bathrooms are clean, but the showers are a bit small and you have to continuously push the button to get water. The bathrooms also have towel racks, soap dishes, and hooks on which to hang clothes.
Common Spaces
The hostel has a large common area divided into several smaller areas each with several couches, tables, and a TV. This hostel also has charging adapters and hair dryers to borrow (they are free to rent -- you just have to put down a deposit), and free towels. There is also a book exchange and the hostel also has several books about Galway and Ireland, which guests can borrow. Breakfast is provided and the hostel also has a large kitchen area with everything necessary to prepare a meal. Food is not allowed in rooms. Wi-Fi is only available in the common area and there are also several computers with internet access in the common area. There are often lots of people in the common area and it is easy to meet people. Overall the hostel is laid back and social. This hostel also has a luggage storage room and has lockers available near reception.
Summary
Overall the Sleepzone YHA is a fun hostel. The staff are friendly and there are lots of people around to meet and hang out with. It is also clean and located close to everything.
Great time staying here
I stayed here for a few nights and had a great time. The kitchen was well stocked with pots, pans, mugs, plates. There were plenty of stove tops to keep congestion in the kitchen to a minimum. There's no drinking allowed on the grounds, but plenty of people were drinking. Just be discreet about it (pour into a cup and don't be obnoxious) and no one seems to mind. The lounge area closes at midnight which can be a bit problematic if you're a night owl. Beds and rooms were standard for a typical hostel. Nothing out of the ordinary there. Easy access to shopping and groceries. I'd recommend staying here to anyone visiting Galway.
Ok as a last resort, but there are much better in Galway
The hostel is acceptable in all areas, but nothing special. The location is a bit dodgy and in the transition area from the square toward the more industrial area. There are no lockers or luggage storage in the crowded rooms. The bathrooms are very small and have quarter-sized sinks that were barely large enough to rinse a razor after shaving. The breakfast was complete crap and consisted of white bread with butter or jam with instant coffee and cheap orange juice. The hostel doesn't allow alcohol anywhere in the hostel, so you won't find a lively social crowd in the common areas. If a hostel on Eyre Square is available, I would highly recommend picking a newer hostel in a better location, with a more social atmosphere that provides under-bed luggage cages.
Very nice
I stayed only over 1 night. All excellent, except the noise from outside.
Very good
It was our first stay at the slepzone, and we are more than satisfied. The hostel is more like a simple hotel, than a hostel. The staff was very sympathetic, everything was clean, and the location perfect.
This hostel was great! The location is convenient and quiet. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I was in the nine-bed female dorm and it was big and clean and even had an en-suite bathroom, and a balcony. There was free internet which was hard to get on, but it was worth the wait to get it free! It's a great place to stay and great value for your money.
Nice hostel, close to the bus station, quiet, helpful staff, nice kitchen, good price for value!
