One of the highlights of our 2005 trip to Ireland.
We are in our 50's, this is the first hostel we ever stayed at. We has a blast! It's a true hostel with a community kitchen, showers, and a great room with fireplace where everyone from all over the world sat and shared travel stories. It had its own stone pub built off the side of the farmhouse where local musician's would gather for a pint or two and we often ended up enjoying an impromptu night of entertainment. An added bonus was that since the hostel owned the pub they could stay open until the last stragglers left. Still talk about it and so glad we found the place.
Location Excellent, Staff very friendly, facilities spotless.
Stayed here a few months back July 2008. Have to say it was one of the best weekends ive had in a long time. From the moment we arrived at the hostel we were made to feel very welcome by the barman Pat at the time. As soon as we arrived we headed for the bar (as you do). The valley has a great homey atmosphere with the fire light for most of the day and it's just very cosy. At night they have two or three people who play traditional Irish music, which I personally thought was the best thing about the hostel and something which I looked forward to every night, also one of the musicians was a fantastic guitar player and just in general a really down to earth guy. The dorms in the hostel were a bit cold at night time but if you're coming in late at night after having a few jars you generally forget about being cold. Achill Island has so many activities and places to visit that the Valley is in the perfect spot to suit everyone's needs. All in all a fantastic hostel and highly recommended for meeting new people!
My favorite place on this Earth.
Valley House Holiday Hostel Reviews from the Web
We booked Valley House really last minute to escape a night of camping in the rain! Our 6 bed dorm was decorated really nicely and the beds were big and comfortable. The staff were all super friendly and we stayed at the bar for food, drinks and music. Good Gluten Free options at the bar, could do with some options at breakfast too.
A charming old country house with a fascinating history.
Loved the gardens and charring to the locals in the friendly pub attached to the hostel.
Would stay there again.
Nice place, nice people. Having a car would help since it is so remote. Thank goodness the bus came!
Fun spot with the pub there, just know it can get a little hectic checking in at night. The owner was incredibly helpful in setting me up for a hike. Overall nice place that Im glad I stayed at.
This was a really nice hostel, great atmosphere in the place and comfortable and clean rooms. The Fairy Woods nearby was very nice too..
We had an amazing time at the Valley Hostel! Everyone was so lovely, the staff are so helpful. The food is amazing and the bar is great craic
Achill island, what a place and the hostel just complimented the atmosphere of the place. They have a bar as well.
Had a great stay in Valley Hostel it's an old historic building. Stayed in a 4 bed dorm there is mould on the ceiling that is causing cracks in ceiling paint that would need maintenance.
We really enjoyed our time over there, the staff were kind and nice. The place was clean, the bed is super comfy and we had a great night sleep!!!
Absolutely loved The Valley House Hostel. All the staff were lovely, Valerie in particular was so welcoming and friendly. The food was gorgeous too, my friend adored the chicken wings so much she had them twice. It was a wonderful stay & well definitely be back!
Good location for rambling around Achil
I have been coming to the Valley House for many years. They have upgraded a bit (they have a restaurant now, but self catering is possible) yet I am pleased that it hasnt changed too much. It feels like a privilege to stay in such a beautiful old building. Candles in the hallway, smell of a coal fire, lovely lounge, pub onsite (with food). Highly recommended.
This is a good value but no frills hostel, stayed in the bunk room. The stay was enjoyable, staff very friendly, food from the restaurant is excellent and a bar on site is great for a pint of Guinness after a days surfing/hiking/cycling. Overall the facilities could do with some work. I would consider coming back, maybe a private room next time.
Couples Review, very different to your regular bnb and hostel.
This place will take you back in time, its like an old english estates house, farm yard and courtyard.its has a really old style cosy pub at the bar, good selection of beer taps, drinks to choose from. As you will walk in, you will get a smell of turf fires all over the house. Bedroom type / we had a twin room its was grand basic but it done the job for a 2 night stay.heads up no tvs in place, but 2 areas for wfi. Stunning Lounge.
At last I got to stay in Valley house. Wonderful to stay in an old historic house. Valley house took social distance very seriously which was great to see and hard for them I'm sure. The house is in a perfect, peaceful part of the island with stunning views of the land and sheep. It is very friendly and welcoming and you feel very much at home. the double and twin rooms we had we're spotless. we had dinner each evening each night which was very nice.
This property is advertised as a hostel. The kitchen is not clean and ill equipped, saucepan handles not secure, no lids for saucepans, no oven gloves, tea towels old and discoloured. It does not state anywhere that you cannot bring your own alcohol which one expects to do at a hostel. Mold on walls in shared bathrooms.
We have just returned from our stay at Valley House. Such a lovely spot. Lovely old house steeped in history. The food was amazing. Top marks to the chef. Staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Would recommend it.
Excellent location for venturing around Achill Island. Great property with decent beds. The food was great in the restaurant and there's a good selection of beers. Great fire pit by the lake for hanging out. The showers weren't great as the water temperature couldn't be adjusted so was extremely hot. The water was temperamental with it going on and off, but this wasn't the hostels fault, as it was affecting the whole island. Would recommend as long as you're ok with no frills accommodation.
The Valley House is a house full of character, atmosphere and history. A place where you can completely relax and take a break from the world. Take a walk in our grounds - through the woods or down to the lakeside. Or head out to the beautiful Golden Strand blue flag beach 10 minutes walk away. Play a round of Pitch & Putt and enjoy the magnificent scenery of Blacksod Bay to the north and the Nephin Mountain range to the east. Achill Island can provide you with many outdoor activities or you can just take it easy - it's your choice! Either way, come back to a warm welcome and comfortable accommodation at The Valley House. Have a drink by the fire in our own fully-licensed public bar. Play a game of pool or darts and join in a music session - everyone is welcome and encouraged to take part. We hope to see you soon in The Valley!
