Karoo Soul Backpackers & Cottages has acquired a very good reputation in Oudtshoorn -- this popular backpackers' stop on the Garden Route -- through word-of-mouth recommendations from travelers and it's easy to see why.
The Location
The property sits up on a ridge above the main road coming in to Oudtshoorn from George. The large letters announcing the guesthouse along the front wall are easy to spot, but this is not the way in! Guests must take a circuitous route, down side streets, to the back of the property, where there is a security gate, and enter here. Once you have checked in, you will be given the security code for the padlock on the front pedestrian gate. The guesthouse is only an eight-minute walk into the town center, where you'll find plenty of supermarkets, ATMs, and restaurants.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Karoo Soul has six rooms and two cottages in and around their very old house. The two cottages are en suites and accommodate two in the double and up to four in the family cottage. In the main house, there are six rooms, mostly doubles, which can also be made into twin rooms or have an extra bed if requested. The one dorm has six beds and shares bathrooms with the private rooms. The wooden bunks go with the wooden floors in being a bit squeaky, but they are comfortable with good mattresses and bedding. Extra blankets are available during the winter months. The dorm also has a ceiling fan for the summertime. Each bed has a bedside light and a power point.
Bath towels are provided for all guests including the dorm guests. There are three bathrooms in the house; one has a toilet and a bathtub, while the other two have a toilet and shower stall each. Everything in the house is as clean as a whistle.
Common Spaces
All the common spaces, with the exception of the guests' kitchen, are outside. The house has tables and chairs scattered around the covered landing, but the main social space is the lapa (or gazebo), which sits in the garden. This has many chairs and tables, and a braai (BBQ) and fireplace under cover. The lapa is located right next to the little swimming pool. The guests' kitchen has a kettle, toaster, microwave, five gas rings, and a fridge. It's quite small, but has plenty of pots, pans, cutlery, and crockery all in tip top condition. The free Wi-Fi is available throughout the main house.
Summary
This is a lovely old house full of charm and character. It's small and intimate and exceptionally well looked after. You can organize trips into the mountain passes from here, and ostrich farm and vineyard visits, too. In keeping with the very high standards of Oudtshoorn hostels, this is another excellent choice.

With 4 140 square meters of succulent-rich property, you're guaranteed to find a spot to do what you wish for: Write your memoirs, have a swim, a beer, or a rest. Smell a fire or see it set on the horizon. After all, the view from the Karoo Soul perch goes from the Outeniqua Mountains all the way to the Swartberg Mountains, whilst still being within walking distance to Oudtshoorn’s lovely restaurants, town centre and museums.
Choose a hammock, a kayak, or a mountain bike; meerkats, cheetahs, horses or caves – if you want entertainment, you’ll have it.
Rooms are spacious, all with views. The kitchen's fully equipped and bathrooms spotless clean, cared for by the owner, a well seasoned traveler who understands the need for a proper base.
