Hostel Casa Del Parque

The Review

Located within an easy walk of all amenities, including the bus station to/from the airport, Hostel Casa del Parque offers up just about everything a traveler would need during a Costa Rican excursion.

The Location

“Del Parque” here refers to the beautiful, tree-lined Parque Nacional that the hostel opens up onto. The neighbourhood is surprisingly quiet for a central location, and you'll find groceries, bars, a taxi stand, and much more within a few minutes' walk. If taking the public bus from the airport, it'll drop you off at the station by the hospital. Simply walk one block north to the Avenida Central and follow that eastward all the way to Calle 19. It'll have a few name changes on the way, but don't worry about that. If you've lost count, you'll pass a grocery store to your left, then after going up the hill, look for the AM/PM store at a corner and turn left here. Another one-and-a-half blocks and you'll find the white, gated hostel on your right. Reach up high for the doorbell! They also offer airport pickups, but it's very easy to find -- roughly a thirty-minute walk on a safe, busy shopping strip.

Rooms and Bathrooms

This spacious house offers a small number of private rooms, mostly with shared bathrooms, and one ten-bed dorm with its own bathroom that has hot water. The dormitory offers comfortable individual beds (no more restless bunk mates!), and lockers, but it isn't a lockable room nor one where you would necessarily get much privacy. Instead, the dorm is an open area located up a set of stairs so noise from the common space on the main floor can be a potential issue. When full, it can be a bit of a wait for the shower (the dorm's bathroom consists of one sink, a toilet, and shower), but there are additional bathrooms downstairs if nature calls and you just can't wait.

Common Spaces

The bright kitchen is a great place to cook up dinner with new friends or partake in free tea and coffee (although it does close overnight); the spacious sitting room has plenty of seating and Costa Rican reading material to peruse. There's also a beautiful courtyard surrounded in plants and playful birds that's an ideal place to eat or just hang out. Hostel Casa del Parque offers fantastic travel info via reading material and friendly staff, and tours. Staying here can feel a bit like visiting a rich auntie's fancy house, with the exception of the TV room with its very well-worn couch and cosy interior, and the front yard which seems a bit under construction. There's free Wi-Fi, although it doesn't reach the entire building, and there's no public internet computers to use so you might need to ask a staff member if you can pop onto his or her laptop if you need to check your email.

Overall, Hostel Casa del Parque is a very good option for reasonably priced, secure, and centrally located accommodation in San Jose. It's peaceful enough to get a good night's sleep with excellent potential for meeting other like-minded individuals who may want to party it up, preferably at a nearby bar!

Nice place
The building is cool. Rodger is super nice. The tv and movie selection was nice after months without watching any. The dorm can get a little loud but eat plugs are a must in any hostel though. There's some trendy places right around the corner and 2 supermarkets within walking distance.

Treated like a walking dollar -- yuck
We found this hostel online at 8 dollars a night but had poor wifi and couldn't book online so we just showed up. All around the world walking in is usually cheaper anyways. Upon arrival they wanted to charge us 10 because we were walk ins. Then they invented an exchange rate because we wanted to pay in their local currency which would have been an extra dollar each and would not honor the government exchange rate of the day. The volunteer was very strange with us and did not make us feel welcome. While the hostel used to be a house and looks nice, it is out of shape. poor wifi, roof leaks, and only two bathrooms for more than 25 guests. the dorm beds are clean but old and rickety. toilet and shower are always occupied for dorm. very few outlets. They have a nice tv and movies to watch and a good location. But volunteers were unfriendly and poorly trained. After telling us we could leave our bags and await our flight we were told by someone else later in the day that we had to pay 7 dollars a piece just to hang out and use the wifi. Their reasons given are "policy" and "that's how every hostel does it here." I beg to differ and have never encountered this in 2 years of travel around the world, especially after staying a few nights. I felt like I was merely a walking dollar bill and not a human in front of them. I would not return to this hostel.

Great Hostel
This a hostel, not a hotel, so yes there is some sharing. The place is clean, with at least 3 private rooms and of course a dorm area. I chose a room and am very satisfied. I will be back in 2 weeks just as I leave Costa Rica.

There is better
If you like architecture from 1930-period, then go and enjoy sleeping there and if you have to go up early, then it is also ok. Some of the people working there are super nice, as there was a certain Roger and the nice cleaning women Sonja. Two great persons who know how to treat a guest. But they should really get rid of the evening/night guy who shows too much he does not like what he is doing there. Also the closing time at ten!! You cannot even go to the teatre. No really, it is too much about gaining money with as less as efforts possible. But as I said, the two nice people I mentioned above make it all by all acceptable. But there are much more places in San Jose where you do not have to cope with all this nuisances. So, all by all I cannot recommend it, although I do like the style of the house very much. And early morning it gets quite noisy outside. And yes, before I forget, I stayed there 2 times and each time they wanted me to pay more than what was mentioned on the booking agreement. So watch out.

Response from the accommodation: Hello Albert, im sorry to hear our place did not meet your expectations, yes we do have a closing time of 10pm but you could always get the key to come back any time you wanted, also some times prices might differ from site to site but if you bring the reservation confirmation from the site we would then honor the prices, next time please just talk to us to avoid any inconvenience. I hope the rest of your vacation was great in Costa Rica.

Great place to stay!
Great location, excellent staff and a nice house, perfect combination.
Very good
My recommendation -- beds should be a bit apart from each other. Staff is excellent, I will come here again.

An ok place to spend a day or two in San Jose
I got to say, the staff is very friendly and utmost helpful. We stayed in a private room, which was huge, but not very clean. We had to use the shower upstairs, which is the only shower and there is only one for the whole hostel. Ti get there you walk through the dorm, which is basically the upper floor where beds are standing to each other. You pass the beds to be lucky to get into that bath room, which has only the toilet and the shower. The kitchen area is nice, and they have a nice inner court yard ... to sit and talk.
