GATE80 Kyoto Nijo is quiet but has many facilities you can’t find at another hostel, such as ping-pong table, foosball table, and video games, plus there’s free bread and jam, shaved ice cream, and coffee and tea. It is nearby Nijo Castle and Golden Temple but it’s easier if you take the bus or subway to other main attractions such as Gion, Nishiki Market, and the Riverside area.
The Location
It’s a good place to stay if the guest wants to visit Nijo Castle and the Golden Temple since it’s in between; for other touristy places, it might be necessary to take the MRT or bus. The bus stop is right in front of the hostel and the nearest MRT is Nijo Castle (seven minutes' walking). It is easy to recognize, as there’s a big sign outside.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are private and shared rooms, all with shared facilities. The private rooms include a single, a double, a triple, a quadruple, and a family room. The shared dorms each have twenty-two beds and include mixed and female-only options. In shared dorms, the bed is self made, and it’s just the futon and a duvet, no extra sheet. There is a curtain for privacy, hangers, a lamp, and plugs inside the box. The lockers for the mixed dormitory are located on the first floor in the common area; for the female-only, they are inside the dorm. They are medium-sized, so they are big enough for a small backpack or camera.
The shared showers and toilets can be a little messy sometimes, but are clean in general. Downstairs, the showers have a bathtub and upstairs it’s only the shower cabin with dressing room area as well. Hot shower and amenities -- shampoo, body soap, and conditioner -- are available. There are hair dryers and slippers for the guests’ convenience.
Common Spaces
There are two common areas. The main one, located on the first floor, consists of dining tables and a sofa, TV, computer available for guests, and a collection of manga. There is a table with free coffee and tea, and on the second floor, there are more sofas, a Street Fighter video game machine, video games, ping-pong table, and a foosball table. There’s free coffee, water, bread, jam, and shaved ice cream. Washing and drying machines are available.
Summary
This is a good option if you want to visit Nijo Castle and Golden Temple, but a bit far from the other main attractions, so you may have to take the bus or subway to visit them. This place has everything for a nice stay -- including free coffee, bread, video games, ping-pong table, laundry, and lockers.
