The Hostelz.com Review - Genuine, independent review you can trust.
For about one hundred fifty years, Wolf Creek Inn has been welcoming weary travelers. Although it no longer serves Wells Fargo stagecoach drivers and Applegate Trail pioneers, one of its newest introductions to this historic building is a wing of dorms that will delight anyone who loves to stay in hostels, as well as anyone who loves living history!
The Location
Wolf Creek is a small, unincorporated community in Southern Oregon. It used to serve as a good resting point along stagecoach routes. Today it is conveniently located off the Interstate Five. There are plenty of signs on the I-Five and once you get off the freeway that will direct you to Wolf Creek Inn. The inn itself is the community's main attraction, although there are plenty more things to do in nearby towns. Wolf Creek Inn has a huge parking lot for guests and visitors (including an electric-car charging station).
Rooms and Bathrooms
Most overnight guests at Wolf Creek Inn stay in the private rooms. There are nine private rooms, including the Clark Gable suite, in which the famous actor himself stayed. Private rooms also have their own private bathrooms. They are simple and beautifully decorated to reflect the inn's history.
For those who prefer a hostel-style experience, there is a wing in the original section of Wolf Creek Inn with two dorm rooms. The dorms are right next to the Jack London room (which is no longer available to stay in, so it can be preserved as a tribute to the author who stayed there) and a small museum about the inn's history. The small dorm rooms each have two beds each. Bathrooms are not in the dorm rooms, but there are a few public restrooms throughout the inn.
Common Spaces
The original men's parlor is now a gift shop and the women's parlor is now a continental breakfast room, but nowadays everyone is welcome in both parlors. The Wolf Creek Tavern is a restaurant that operates inside Wolf Creek Inn and serves three meals on most days. There's plenty of other common space such a ballroom, a backyard with picnic tables, and a front yard with an Applegate Trail Interpretive Center.
To keep it historically accurate, rooms are decorated with period pieces and do not include televisions (other than a projector and screen in the ballroom). However, Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.
Since Wolf Creek Inn is part of the Oregon State Parks department, they offer free guided tours each day. They're open to both overnight guests and day visitors. Take one of these tours or pick up information on a self-guided tour to make sure that you get to experience the rich history, art, and architecture of this building.
Summary
Staying in Oregon's oldest operating hotel isn't just getting a bed for the night -- you get an experience similar to the one travelers got in the the nineteenth century. Whether you stay in the hotel wing or the hostel wing, Wolf Creek Inn has so much to offer throughout its nationally registered historic building.
