The Location
Short Giraffe is in a very convenient central location, right in the middle of the Varkala Beach area. The beach can be reached after a ten-minute walk, while restaurants and souvenir shops are only five minutes away. Still, the place manages to retain a very relaxing vibe and a truly authentic feel. The train and bus stations as well as Varkala city centre are too far to walk on foot, but the hostel provides a scooter that guests can use for short trips free of charge.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel offers a variety of accommodation types, from tents through private huts to dorms, however, the dorm-style rooms dominate. These are a bit dark and crammed, but one of them is en suite and even has a little storage area. All rooms come with medium-sized lockers, but you will need to have your own padlock. There are two extras bathrooms near the common areas and these are much nicer than the ones belonging to the dorm. They are spacious and have free soap, shower gel, shampoo, and toilet paper.
Common Spaces
The common areas make Short Giraffe really special. It has an incredibly spacious outdoors areas surrounding it where everybody will find something to their taste -- there is a ping-pong table, slackline, badminton net with racquets, hammocks to chill on, as well as a BBQ area with comfy outdoors sofas where BBQ nights are organised every few days. Moreover, the main building has a nice terrace, which is where people like to have their breakfast and chat in the evenings. There is a cook living on site and food can be ordered all through the day at very reasonable prices. However, if you prefer to cook for yourself, you can also do that in the well-equipped guest kitchen. Last, but not least, there is also an indoors chilling-out area with card and board games and a mini library. Throughout the property, there are three Wi-Fi networks available.
Summary
Short Giraffe is just great and and really stands out amongst the few local hostels with the amount of added perks it offers. The wonderful garden area is ideal for chilling and its closeness to the beach makes it an ideal base for a relaxing vacation.
