Besides functioning as a hostel for travelers, Haiphong Woody Garden Hostel also offers permanent residence for teachers participating in a local project, which means that it has a really homey feel and you will always find people around to give travel advice and recommendations on local things.
As Hai Phong is absolutely not touristy, the only reason people come here is to have a sleep before heading on to Cat Ba or Ha Long Bay. Therefore, it does not really matter where your hostel is located, as most of the town is rather residential with few sights to see. Haiphong Woody Garden is just off the motorway in a quiet residential neighbourhood. The boat harbour to Cat Ba is quite far from here, but you can always take the local bus or a tuk tuk.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel is small and cozy and only has two rooms, which are both dorms. These are rather crowded with many bunks inside, which makes it hard to find space to put your backpack. What is quite annoying is that while the lower bunks have thick curtains around them, the upper ones are exposed to the light in the room. The room is en suite and the bathroom is quite ok, but you can really notice that some people live there permanently as it has many personal items inside, which might make you feel a bit awkward to use it.
The hostel has some really nice outdoor areas with hammocks, mattresses, and a ping-pong table. However, the best part is the spacious and well-equipped kitchen and the adjoining living room and movie area. This part of the hostel feels like being at home. In the evenings, a local cook prepares a meal and you can sign up to have a plate for an extremely cheap price. However, while breakfast is supposed to be included, it is in fact a brunch starting at 11 a.m. so it does not work out well for people staying just one night and heading on early in the morning.
Haiphong Woody Garden Hostel has a real cozy feel and familiar atmosphere that can feel quite comforting when you are on a long-term trip away from home. The common areas are really nice, but do not count on breakfast if you are leaving early!
