Karandi Hostel Reviews

Karandi Hostel is one of those rare, near-perfect places you find when traveling. It is an absolute gem when it comes to a clean and tidy place to chill for some time while exploring the wonders of Marino Ballena National Park. Karandi is a very eco-conscious hostel and not just by name -- this translates into proper recycling, efforts to integrate the hostel into the environment and thus attract wildlife, and partaking in local (clean-up) initiatives.

The Location

The hostel is located in a residential neighbourhood in Bahia Uvita outside of Uvita. It can be reached by asking the bus driver to be dropped off at “Bahia Uvita” and then following the signs along a gravel road for a couple hundred metres. There are restaurants and a small supermarket within easy walking distance. To reach the beach of Marino Ballena National Park, walk about fifteen minutes. Technically you pay entrance to get into the park and thus to the beach, but there is no ticket booth or other enforcement in this location.

The hostel is surrounded by wildlife, starting with the sloths in the trees along the road to the hostel, basilisk lizards and iguanas in the garden, and the birds attracted to the plantain buffet put out by the employers.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorm rooms have two sturdy bunk beds with comfortable mattresses and a ceiling fan. Each bunk has its own electrical outlets and there are large lockers in the dorm (bring a padlock). A large glass patio door with an additional screen door opens onto a small terrace with stairs into the garden. Despite the mosquito screen, there are some mosquitoes around. The dorm door can be locked while the gate to the property stays unlocked at all times. The neighbourhood feels very safe.

The bathroom can be found within twenty metre of the dorm rooms and have two sinks, two toilets, and two showers (only cold water, which is a relief in this climate) and are kept exceptionally clean. Furthermore there are two more outdoor showers for cleaning off sand when returning from the beach.

Common Spaces

There is a large, open-to-the-outside common area with a kitchen, dining table, a long table and bench facing the garden for wildlife watching, and hammocks. There are plenty of kitchen utensils, and both this area and the fridge are kept very clean. Here you can also find a small book exchange, and it is the perfect place to watch birds on the plantain feeder.

Karandi is a very social place with a very engaged staff. The staff are always happy to help with information and they keep a board on tide times (to explore the Whale's Tail Beach) and local events updated. Wi-Fi works well in the rooms and the common areas.

Summary

Karandi is the place to stay for wildlife lovers who want to explore the beaches and forests of Marino Ballena National Park.
