Backpack Hostel 44 is located in the most random place in the capital city of Colombo away from all the sights and touristic areas. However, once you step inside, you will never regret your choice of booking this place. Spacious interiors with many different common areas, a mini swimming pool, amazingly tidy dorms, and the most filling free breakfast are just some of the perks of staying here.
The Location
The hostel gets its name from being located under number forty-four on Kirulapone Avenue. It is really easy to find, but the front gate is really tricky to open, so for a moment you might think that the hostel has closed down and is not accepting visitors anymore. Your best bet is to ask some local people from the workshops opposite to show you how to get inside. The location of this hostel is far from excellent; there is absolutely nothing worth looking at in walking distance and you would need to travel for about thirty minutes on the bus to get to the center. However, if you walk to the end of the street, you will be rewarded with a wide choice of really cheap local eateries, which is a bonus on its own.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel offers a variety of room types, including female-only dorms. The rooms are spotlessly clean and tidy and have a very pleasant style. They are cooled by air conditioning and have lockers as well as electronic plugs next to your bed. They are also really spacious and there are some bedside tables and clothes-hanging facilities provided. The bathrooms are right next door; they are also remarkably clean (though less modern) and provide shower gel and nice hot showers.
Common Spaces
The biggest advantage of the hostel is the amount and variety of common areas it provides. First of all, it has a really big outdoor area that boasts a mini swimming pool. Do not expect to be swimming around in it much though -- it is only just big enough to sit down and chill in. Indoors, the entire lower floor is dedicated to socialisation -- there is a board game corner, a guitar corner, and a spacious and modern kitchen with an eating area. You are welcome to cook here, and free tea and coffee are provided throughout the day. The free breakfast served in the morning is amazing and includes eggs, sausages, yoghurt, and bread with jam. You will definitely start your day with a full stomach if you stay here!
Summary
This place is excellent value for the money! If you can overlook the fact that you are far from the center, what the hostel provides is beyond and above what you could realistically expect for the price!

• We do provide shuttle service upon request, but there are more economical options that we recommend:
• All the way by bus ( roughly $1.9): take a bus from the airport to Colombo Fort; from Colombo Fort, take bus 138 and get off at Kirulapone bus station. The hostel is just across the street!
• Half bus Half Tuk Tuk (roughly $4.8): take a bus from the airport to Colombo Fort; from Colombo Fort, hail a tuk tuk/ order an Uber or Pick me directly to the hostel.
• All the way by Tuk Tuk (roughly $7.9): Order an Uber or PickMe tuk tuk (recommended) or hail one off the street.
• All the way by Taxi (roughly $11): Order an Uber or PickMe tuk tuk (recommended) or hail one off the street.
