HI - Sibiu - The Old Town Hostel gives you a chance to live in a heart of cultural capital of Transylvania. If you want to look out the window and see the main square of the city, Old Town Hostel provides this.
The Location
The hostel is located in tenement house at Piaa Mic in Sibiu's Old Town. Its almost impossible to miss the huge, green building that has the name of the hostel written on it. The entrance to the hostel, located on a first floor, is also very well marked.
Rooms and Bathrooms
In the hostel there are three bedrooms -- one with four beds, one with eight beds, and one private with a huge double bed. Unfortunately, the one with four beds is located between kitchen and the other bedroom, so if you decide to stay there, you will have to deal with people walking through it all the time. Another problem may be the fact that this smaller bedroom doesnt have a window. But except that, both rooms we had opportunity to see are very nice -- with wooden floors and paintings on the walls. In the smaller bedroom, there are also lockers for valuable items. We also cant say anything bad about the bathroom, except the fact there is only one and it is combined with toilet so queues in morning rush hours are inevitable.
Common Spaces
The hostel's kitchen is very well equipped -- you can find there every needed appliance, including microwave, toaster, and coffee machine. There's also enough plates and cutlery for every guest. At two tables, there is space for seven people having a meal in the same time.
Summary
The undeniable trump of the Old Town Hostel is its staff -- they are very helpful and friendly, caring for the guest and serving very good music in the hall during the day. A very nice gesture is the free welcome drink, which is served for free in the restaurant on the opposite side of Piaa Mic. You can also buy breakfast there for a low price, being a guest of the hostel. It includes coffee, a glass of juice, and omelet with toasts -- it is very tasty. But still, the great location of the hostel remains its trademark -- it lets you forget about queue for the toilet or the bunch of people walking through your bedroom during the night.
HI - Sibiu - The Old Town Hostel is easy to find, with a great location, and a typical sterile HI hostel feel.
The Location
It's a short walk from the train/bus station to this hostel in the old town. No transport needed -- really it's a fifteen-minute walk there, just head up the main street from the stations toward the clock town/church towers.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms are large and often walk through to other dorms. One dorm has a TV, the other just two chairs and the smaller one nothing but beds. There is no lockers but they do have small locking cupboards to stash passport/tickets/camera. The beds are older -- some mattresses have buttons (old school and not comfortable) others feel like wooden planks and the odd one is new. There is only two toilets and two showers that are decently clean but line-ups are the norm.
Common Spaces
The common area is a cold titled kitchen that smells like it once was a bathroom. The staff can help with laundry for a price and really are more interested in socializing with visiting friends than helping you. (They can be cold and rude.) There is one computer but it is the staff one as well and not really available at times, but there is free Wi-Fi. It's not really set up for socializing -- the hostel is frequented by large groups so not really for the backpacker looking to meet others. Smoking is allowed in the kitchen, so it is smoky.
Summary
The location can't be beat, but if you are hoping to meet other backpackers, perhaps look into another accommodation.
The best ever!!
We stayed there during the Artmania festival. This hostel has got to be the very best! The staff are extremely nice and helpful. The location is perfect. The hostel is clean as clean can be. The town is also great, especially during the festival! I definitely recommend this hostel. Oh, and the kitchen facilities are great too. It's almost too good to be called a hostel. Well done. Keep it up.
Great location. Good kitchen. Clean. Bathrooms are tiny. Only one working toilet for twenty-seven guest beds. Not very quiet at night. They shouldnt allow smoking in kitchen and common rooms. Staff is friendly, nice guys, but not very helpful.
