Going Om Hostel, Reviews

Going Om Hostel, Mirissa is an artistically decorated hostel where you'll find plenty of hipsters hanging out. It has a chilled vibe, but this can easily be spoilt due to it being located on a very noisy road. Being woken up by this in the mornings is also a problem. Nevertheless, it's a social hostel and its compact layout means that at some point you'll bump into everyone staying here.

The Location

There are many buses that run along the coast road, and the hostel is located on this road, just two minutes from the beach. Ask the ticket guy on the bus to tell you when you reach Mirissa. It's a very small town with one large supermarket on the main road -- ask a local to point you in the direction of this supermarket. The hostel is located ten meters to the right of this.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The beds are very comfy, but guests often complain of being too cold from the air conditioner and the lack of blankets. When you arrive, ask for a sheet to use to cover you or you'll wake up freezing. The place is kept clean, but the bathrooms are starting to fall apart. For example, the doors either don't lock or don't shut at all. And these are en suite bathrooms, which can be embarrassing! There was no hot water on our visit either.

Common Spaces

This is a small but cosy area, with floor cushions arranged in a way that brings the guests together. A book exchange, a guitar, and some board games are available to play, and you'll often see people here. If you hang out here long enough you're sure to find people with whom to go the beach bars. As mentioned, this is very "hipstery" hostel, so if that's not your thing, book somewhere else. Wi-Fi just about works but can be slow at times.

Summary

This is the kind of place where you'll see a backpacker playing the guitar in one room, someone meditating in another, and a few hungover people wandering around. It needs a bit of maintenance in a few places but overall it's not a bad place. Events such as movie nights are advertised on booking sites, however, this wasn't the case on out visit. Furthermore, diving and surfing aren't really run by the hostel.
