Maya Hostel Berat is a friendly and welcoming addition to the small but decent collection of hostels in Berat. It is new, clean, comfortable, and relaxing -- everything a traveler could wish for.
The Location
Maya Hostel is located in Berat, Albania, in a neighborhood called Gorica across the river from the principal Old Town area of Berat, which is called Mangalem. It is also considered to be part of the Old Town with an impressive collection of historical houses of its own. Actually, both Mangalem and Gorica districts are part of the World Heritage Site under protection. As a historical tidbit for those who are interested, the Gorica neighborhood used to be the non-Muslim area of Berat in the Ottoman times, while the Muslim population resided mainly in Mangalem on the other side of the river. But nowadays there is no such distinction.
The hostel is just just next to the river, with a calming view of the river and of the Mangalem district on the other side.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Rooms in Maya Hostel are distributed on the two upper floors. They have both private rooms and dorms. The dorm has a bathroom inside with a bathtub and toilet. All the dorm beds have a privacy curtain. And the beds are quite comfortable.
Common Spaces
The hostel is actually a three-story house with a nice garden. And the garden is the best part of the hostel in which to hang out. There is a small fountain in the middle of the garden and several sun chairs where you can lay down and enjoy the sun. There are also tables and chairs both outside and inside. The kitchen is on the first floor behind the reception and there small bar next to it. The complimentary buffet breakfast is served here as well and it is very good! You can buy beer and water at the hostel. It is self service, you just write down what you've consumed and pay when you check out.
Summary
The owner is a great character who's friendly and easygoing. He would most probably have a drink with you and other guests in the evening and offer you some homemade raki, the local liquor made from plums or grapes. Just remember that it is actually very strong and you would be hard placed to compete with him. This and more all contributes to giving the whole place a very pleasant and welcoming vibe. It's a tranquil oasis in the middle of an already quite calm town.

Location and Contact
Location
• The bus terminal in Berat is approximately 1.5km from the center of town. Most of the time buses arrive and depart from the new terminal. But every once and awhile buses do arrive in the center. Whatever the case, here are the directions.
• FROM THE TERMINAL
• BY CITY BUS
• From the BUS TERMINAL, cross the street and get on the blue and white city bus (30 lek) that goes into town. They only run one route, so you should have no problems.
• GET OFF the bus on the 5th stop, go back down the hill towards the Suspension Bridge. Cross the bridge and turn right walking past ANTIGONI RESTAURANT, for about 4 minutes. We are directly in front of the river, and have a large Red & Black Albanian flag flying outsite our property. If the bus does go into town, ask anyone for Gorica and follow the directions above after crossing the suspension bridge.
• BY TAXI
• ASK the taxi driver to take you to Gorica, “Hostel Maya” (If the driver is unsure have him call 067 519 9166)
• If you get lost, ask anyone for Hostel Maya in Gorica.
