Droid Hostel is a small hostel with the choice of one female or two mixed dorms. It is located on the top floor of a three-story building. Rooms feature air conditioning and Wi-Fi. There is free drinking water in the kitchen. Breakfast is not included.
The Location
The hostel is ideally located for the bus station, though consequently not ideally located for the tourist attractions in White Town. The walk from the bus station takes less than ten minutes, though make sure you look up to see that you're on the right street -- the hostel is brightly colored with a sign on the front, but with no indication below of where you actually enter. Their listing is also not very helpful with this. In fact, you need to take the stairs to the right of the pharmacy on the ground floor, which lead to a doctors clinic on the first floor. You then continue up the stairs behind you, which really could do with a sign saying "Hostel This Way!" to find the place. There is no reception desk either, so you will have to hope someone will be around to help you in the common area.
To get to White Town it is either a tuk tuk ride, or a forty-five-minute walk through a somewhat dodgy area. The immediate vicinity of the hostel has a few shops and bakeries.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The four- and six-bed dorms are en suite, including rather oddly, a bathtub in the six-bed dorm, plus a separate Western-style toilet. The ten-bed room has a common, Indian-style bathroom with long drop toilet. You will not find hot water in this hostel. Despite the hostel being mostly empty when we stayed, we found ourselves waiting on several occasions for an available bathroom.
The bathrooms are not cleaned regularly enough, though they do provide hand soap and shampoo. There are no towel rails or toiletry shelves.
The ten-bed dorm is very spacious, and each bed has a full backpack-sized locker, but they are key-lockable and most of the keys are missing, rendering them rather useless. The beds each have a light and power socket and relatively comfortable mattress.
Common Spaces
One space contains the table-tennis table. Next to this, you will find an area with a nice sofa and a handful of books and games. Then there is a dining area and the kitchen, which is well equipped enough to make good use of, including a fridge. There is a large outside area and rooftop, though it has not been arranged in any way to make use of the space other than hanging washing lines. You will find both backpackers and Indian holiday-makers here, but the atmosphere is somewhat lacking.
Summary
This hostel is most convenient for the bus station and reasonably priced. It's not a bad option.

• From Pondicherry Bus Station
• 1. By walk
• You can walk from Pondy Bus Station to Droid Hostel, it is only 600m from it.
• Take right after exiting bus stand and walk till T junction and take left and walk on right side of road, you'll find Droid Hostel before big furniture shop called RR Dream Home.
• 2. By Auto
• Take walking bridge to cross main road and take an auto (as it will avoid a lot of distance to take a U-turn). It should not cost more than 60 INR.
• From Chennai Airport
• 1. By Bus
• Take a local bus/tax to Koyambed (Chennai) Bus Station, and take a bus to Pondicherry, you can get down at 'Housing board' or 'Nellithope signal' bus stops, which are 50 m by walk on both side of Droid Hostel.
• Trip to Koyambed can vary from 0.5 - 2 hours depending on traffic, Koyambed to Pondicherry takes 3 - 4 hours, and it costs 110 - 280 INR.
• 2. By Taxi
• Trip from Chennai Airport to Pondicherry is 150 kms, usually costs around 2500 INR, but this is bargainable and if you manage to find people travelling to pondy you can share the cost, usually there are some in every international flight.
• For directions to driver, everyone in pondy knows 'Indira Gandhi statue', for more precise landmark ask if he knows 'Housing board' or 'Nellithope signal'. Look for 'Droid Hostel' board on left side.
• From Pondicherry Train Station
• 1. By Bus
• At every train arrival in Pondy Train Station there is a bus to Pondy Bus Station, take it and get down at 'Nellithope signal', bus ride takes 10 - 15 mins.
• 2. By Auto
• You can also take a auto to 'Nellithope signal'/'Housing board', it is 2.5 kms and should not cost more than 100 INR.
