Jungle Republic

The Hostelz.com Review

Jungle Republic is an incredibly dodgy place that feels more like a squat than a hostel. It is near a construction site in an unattractive part of the island and it is rundown and basic, and holds a party on Fridays that will keep you awake the whole night.

The Location

Unlike the name suggests, Jungle Republic is not inside a jungle and not even inside a forest, but instead in an area with a few trees next to the road that connects Saracen Bay with Sunset Bay, which is becoming more and more widely used and has construction work going on all around it. So if you are dreaming of a nice quiet, natural location, this is far from that. Its only advantage is that it is close enough to Saracen Bay to walk there in about fifteen minutes.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are quite frankly rather outrageous! The hostel consists of several buildings and the main building hosting the dorms does not even have a door, so anybody can just walk inside as they please, which means that there is absolutely no security. This is especially problematic because once a week, the hostel hosts a huge party and the premises are full of outsiders who might just walk into the dorms any time they want to. The interior is a long hallway with a huge amount of bunks crammed inside. At least they do have curtains on them though. The bathrooms are not much better either; they are in a separate building on the other side of the territory of the hostel and are extremely dirty and old and most of them are broken.

Common Spaces

The hostel is spread out over a large area and there is plenty of space amongst the buildings to chill. However, there are very few facilities provided for this. Your best bet is to go to the hut of the reception where there are at least a few wooden tables and chairs where you can sit. Near the reception's building, there is a huge stage, and this is where the weekly party is held; however, if you prefer your sleep over loud music, make sure not to book for Fridays. Also, if you will need Wi-Fi, do not pick this place, as it seems to be permanently down.

If you make it all the way out to the island of Koh Rong Samloem, you would probably want to treat yourself to something nice -- Jungle Republic is definitely not this! As it's extremely basic, with seemingly no maintenance having been done since its opening and with a big issue of security, if you increase the price you are willing to pay just a little bit, you are guaranteed to find something much better!
