Jungle Hostel Villa is a good, cheap hostel if you're looking outside the fort area.

The Location

The hostel itself is located outside the main fort area in Galle; although it's only around a twenty-minute walk into the area, you must weigh up if saving a few dollars on accommodation is worth traipsing back and forth, especially if you plan to head in during the evening as the walk back is along a main road and it's quite dark. It is located off a main road and surrounded by trees, so it is relatively quiet unless the dogs continually bark throughout the night (we are unsure if they belong to the hostel or the neighbours). It does offer a different look into the bustling city, and there are plenty of stores, supermarkets, and restaurants around as well as the markets. And it's only a short, ten-minute walk to the bus and train stations.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The six-bed dorm is small but provides enough space for everyone and their luggage; the beds are comfortable with clean bedding and top sheet given free of charge (which is an added bonus in many hostels around Sri Lanka). Another bonus is that the guests have free control over the air conditioning remote, allowing you some much needed relief from the afternoon heat.

There is only one bathroom, which could cause a hefty wait if the guest house is completely full. But it is spacious and clean, although it does get a little stuffy.

Common Spaces

The best thing about this hostel is its vast amount of common areas. They have a huge lounge room with couches, although during our stay there were a few weird scenes with possibly the owner's family constantly sitting around in an unwelcoming way, but not to worry -- there is also an upstairs patio area as well as a downstairs outside area with plenty of open space to sit around chatting with fellow travelers and playing cards. They also offer an Asian or Western breakfast for an added few dollars that's served in their little dining area.

Summary

This is a good hostel outside of the fort area -- the staff are absolutely lovely, and the place is very clean at a very low price. It is quiet and allows you to retreat from the hustle and bustle of hectic Galle if you wish to.
