Dorm.no Bergen Reviews

Good location but hard to find

The hostel is near the train station and near the center in a nice street. It was just hard to find because we got just the address of the minibar, where they have also a kind of reception. But it is not in the same street at all and it is closed until 4 o clock! So if you have a problem with entering the hostel (that happens to many guests), there is no one who helps you. The hostel itself is small and nice! If there was soap and towels in the kitchen, bathroom, and toilet, there would be everything you need.

Bad place to be

the timing is very bad. when it says check in at 2, it means you cant leave your luggage if you arrive earlier. mariana is rude, she told me if i dont like it i could book another place. not nice of her, considering that if i would not have showed up at 2 she would have taken the money form the card anyways. quick way of making business.

Clean, good location, but no reception

This hostel is about as close to the train station and center as you can get. It is clean and it has all the facilities a hostel should have, except one very important one: a reception. I had trouble using my phone as the key to open the door (I still don't know how the system is supposed to work), but I called the number listed here and was given a different door code.

DORM.no is a nice central hostel that feels a little like a small home. It is very small with small kitchen, TV/dining room, bathrooms, but features large dorm rooms. It is quiet on weekdays and very busy on weekends. But everyone is extremely friendly, many of whom with which we kept in contact with but a few of the old strange truck drivers who turn up late, leave early, and snore like hell. The hostel is run by the adjoining Jacobs bar, but you won't have too much to do with staff and there is an imposed lock-out from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Location

Dorm.no is extremely central, a two-hundred-meter walk from the train station and to the centre of town and the fish markets. The hostel is strange to find though, as it appears to be just a door. So you have to check in at the adjoining Jacobs bar. There are plenty of supermarkets close by to maximise the use of the kitchen and minimise food costs.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Linen is provided free of charge and the beds are comfortable. The dorm rooms are large -- our room had ten beds (five bunks). All dorm rooms have reasonable sized lockers to store valuables, you just need your own lock.

The toilet and showers are very small, with two toilets that hav a little shelf and basin in each. The three showers are annoying though -- no shelf, basin, soap dishes, or mirror to shave, brush teeth, or store toiletries. The showers are push-button style that last about five seconds before needing to be pressed again. So teeth brushing needs to be done in the small toilet. There are a couple of hooks to hang clothes. All are very clean.

Common Spaces

The common room consists of a small kitchen and a TV/dining room. The kitchen, while small, is good and clean; a small fridge is provided to store food but we would recommend only keeping perishables in there as a lot of food and other people's beer went missing over the three nights we stayed there. The TV/dining room has tables with a number of chairs but is quite small and as on weekends there are a lot of people and it can be quite packed. It's a very social hostel though, lots of young people we became friendly with. There are a few creepy older truck drivers who stand around and snore loudly but they keep to themselves.

Summary

We enjoyed staying in this hostel and would recommend it and stay again. It's small, comfortable, social, and extremely central. Walk everywhere, go to the fish market ,and taste test some Norwegian salmon for free and you will definitely end up buying a small chunk no matter how small your budget.

Very good, but not great

As a previous commenter has said. This is a dorm block in the same building as Jacobs Appartments. The best features about this place are the

* the price - very good value for an expensive country like Norway

* the staff - very helpful & friendly

* the location - only a few minutes walk from the city centre or the train station.

* Free wi-fi internet access - rarely do you get something for free in Norway!

* Its very clean and nicely decorated.

On the downside, there are a number of irritating design flaws about the dorm area. I booked bed in an 8 bed dorm, which turned out to be a cupboard with 8 dorm beds crammed into it. Such was the lack of space that they had used small beds. I'm about average UK height at 1.75m (5'10") and I couldn't lie completely flat on the bed. There were no hooks to hang coats or towels in the rooms, or any spare space to put bags etc. The shower area was equally small and cramped. The communal kitchen was also very small and poorly equipped. The was a microwave and 2 cooking hobs for saucepans but no oven, no grill, no kettle and no toaster. There were also only 4 cups and glasses to share between all guests! A number of guests were also caught out by the fact that you have to rent the hostels own bed linen at 55NOK per person. Something that a number of hostel booking websites don't mention and which adds expense for those on a tight budget.

Still, this is an excellent choice. The very cheapest hotel room in Bergen will costs 3 or 4 times the price of dorm.no. There are also small security lockers to used placed outside the rooms. These are only big enough for things like documents, cash, wallets, MP3 players etc and you need to bring your own padlock to use them.

Reasonable hostel

Fairly stylish fittings, not too big, clean showers and toilets (although the bathrooms tended to flood). The dorms have twelve beds in them and can feel a little cramped. There were no lockers or door locks, and with a combination code for the main door only, anyone could have come in. Nice but not terribly special.

Jacobs is a fun and friendly hostel/hotel. The dorm bit is called Dorm.no and this is the bit you might be booking. The combination of single hotel rooms, apartments and dorms combined with a strong local contingent makes evenings in the garden or bar an exciting mix.

The dorms and communal areas, including the kitchen, are kept spotlessly clean and there is always clean linen once you have paid the one off fee.

During my visit it was quite quiet as it was the end of the season and I suspect that if the hostel were full there would be a wait for one of the three showers in the morning.

The kitchen is nicely laid out but could be better equipped, there is no oven or grill for example.

Possibly the only thing worthy of serious criticism is security. Although the back gate and dorm entrance are protected by key codes these doors tend to be left open during the day. The staff tell me that theft is rare to non-exisitant and seem very relaxed about it. Use the lockers provided for your passport and MP3 player and should not have problems.

At night all the doors are secured so no worries there either.

Highly recommended! AH 15/9/06
