Juan's Riga Hostel Reviews

The name could not be any more clear -- Riga Hostel is a hostel in the Latvian capital and a great choice for backpackers visiting this city.

The Location

Riga Hostel is one of the best-located hostels in Riga, Latvia. It is basically across the street from the railway station. Whereas the area near the railway station is sometimes dodgy in other cities around the world, you will be totally fine walking to Riga Hostel at any time of the day. The bus station and Riga's Old Town are also only a couple of minutes away by foot. The hostel is located the same building as McDonald's and the entrance is between the McDonald's restaurant and the McCafe. There are a few hostels in the same building and Riga Hostel can be found on the fourth floor, which can be accessed by elevator. There is security at the building's entrance during the day, while a chip key will give you access at night.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Riga Hostel offers both private and dorm rooms. All dorm rooms have bunk beds and vary in size, but are quite spacious and equipped with a table where you can sit, plus plenty of power outlets. Lockers are available at the corridor, for which you will receive a key upon check-in. Bathrooms can be found on the corridor. Showers and toilets are in different rooms. The showers are lovely. Wi-Fi can also be accessed in the rooms and the internet speed is good.

Common Spaces

Even though Riga Hostel is not very big, there are several places where you can relax and hang out. In the same corner as the reception, you can find a kitchen with dining table. This is the best area to meet fellow travelers. There is almost always someone here and also the hostel's staff are often up for socializing. The kitchen has decent facilities for preparing and storing your own food. Drinking alcohol is forbidden in the hostel, but it's normally tolerated if it does not affect your behaviour. Tea and coffee are available free of charge. There are a few more seats and couches in the corridors if you prefer to have some time for yourself.

Riga Hostel is a top choice for any backpacker in Riga. In this price range, there are hardly any hostels that can compete with Riga Hostel's facilities, vibe, and great location. Remember to book in advance, though, as this hostel often sells out in peak season.

Good but not great

Liked -- good location, lots of advice about the city, generally good Wi-Fi, reasonably quiet at night, more or less enough bathrooms. Disliked -- low bunk beds, Wi-Fi sometimes cuts out, the kitchen is too small for the number of people, not that easy to find (the hostel entrance is inside a McDonald's) -- lots of little stuff. Overall -- pretty good value for what you pay. Would stay again.

Pleasant staff. Decent facilities for what you pay. Amazing shower.

I really enjoyed my stay at Riga hostel, proper great shower, would recommend for budget hostel. Great location, it's in basically in the McDonald's. You can see the McDonald's from the train station.

No luxury, but lack of nothing.

The hostel is in a very comfortable zone, very close to train station and in five minutes walking you are in the city centre. The entrance is in the middle of a McDonalds, this can be nice for hungry arrivals. Personnel was kind, the place was clean and the atmosphere comfortable overall. Lockers were too small for suitcases but we didn't have any problem with luggage. There is WiFi and free use of computers for visitors, more than enough toilets and showers which were clean. They gave clean bed linen and towel, very nice. Breakfast was nice, quite many things to choose and staff was attentive when we requested more milk and bread. On the last day they let us put our suitcases in a room so we could walk the city without carrying them. For this price I would definitely go again to this hostel, I recommend it.

Nice atmosphere, cheap, Not bad if it weren't for the bugs

The rooms were ok (except the roof dorm where i stayed previously which absolutely stank), nice atmosphere, and the staff were very nice. Breakfast was so so, milk was off, toaster was faulty. I would stay there again, because it was cheap, friendly, had free Wi-Fi, and had a lounge-cum-kitchen but would first check the bed they offered me to see that the bed isn't infected with the bedbugs on the first floor bedroom. I think it was room two (been back a month now). When i got back home, after a couple of days i started itching like hell for almost two weeks and thought it was mosquitoes. I didn't understand why i didn't hear them at all, as usually i'm immediately wide awake when i hear that whine in the night. Only now have i realised what it really was. If it weren't for the bedbugs i would have given a four-star rating.

Tucked away on a quiet side street, Riga Hostel offers the best of both worlds -- an incredible location and an inexpensive price. The hostel is located on the second through seventh floors of a typical old-town building (tall and narrow) in the center of old town Riga, literally within view of St. John's and St. Peter's. In the basement is a "gentleman's club," which the hostel advises against visiting (their information sheet posted on the walls in every room simply says, "they are not our friends"), and on the first floor is a restaurant that is currently closed.

Run by a staff of young, friendly world travelers whom you might find sleeping in a bed next to you on occasion, they provide an open and inviting atmosphere for the hostel. Their kitchen/common room is well-equipped, with a microwave, fridge, toaster, stove, a hot water pot, and free tea and coffee. A computer in the room also offers free Internet access (wi-fi is available).

The rooms range in size from the smallest (housing two people) and the largest (housing fifteen). All the rooms have a separate bathroom with shower and there are two more showers available for use downstairs as well. The rooms are nicely decorated with bright colors and simple, low-to-the-ground bunk beds. The beds are mostly hard mats, although some have foam pads on top, and are surprisingly comfortable after a long day. All the rooms also have some sort of couch/easy chair in them, perfect for lounging around.

The one slight downfall is the bathrooms, which tend to be rather smelly -- almost like there is a sewer backup. They are generally clean, though, except maybe when a whirlwind of sixteen-year-old boys just went through them. All in all, Riga Hostel is a great value.

Excellent location in the heart of Riga's Old Town for this very new hostel. The kitchen is quite big. The cleanliness is remarkable and the staff is really kind and helpful. I have not been in any other hostel in Riga, but I would definitely recommend this one.

Juan's Riga Hostel Reviews from the Web

Clean, friendly place with free coffee and tee.

A little chaotic, but definitely a friendly place. I live here off-season and it functions very well. I'm satisfied.

Great value, well located, friendly and helpful staff. Booked for a night and ended up staying 10 days. Guests are mainly locals and the rest are workers from neighbouring countries, so cool if like me you want to practice Russian etc and avoid English. Small issue of some food disappearing from the common areas but it stopped happening after I bagged it all up, as per hostel rules. Usual story: don't give people an excuse lol. Highly recommended if you're not expecting a palace .

Not bad for a quick stopover with your own key for your shared room, single beds and a McDonalds downstairs!! What else could a man want?!!!

I didn't stay where I was expecting to. Even though I arrived at the place on time, learned that the room that I booked on website is not available ao that they directed me to another 'alternative' one which is not a proper place to spend even a night. Wasn't good to book the hostel. Unfortunate.

The beds are with bugs.. Things are getting stolen.. Rude receptionists... people from streets have the door codes and entering the building and sleeping here.. irresponsible management..

There is STEALING going on in the hostel.

The first night I was there someone stole my phone and they broke into my accounts. I needed to stop my vacation and come back home to deal with this mess. The stuff was not surprised that it happened. It was definitely not the first time. I am not even sure they called the police. Besides that hostel is dirty, it smells bad there and everyone can enter even if they don't live there.

I do NOT RECOMMEND to stay there. Experience was terrible.

Liked: Location. Didn't like: Hygiene is awful. Stuff is not helpfull. Pictures of object posted on site are showing totally different rooms then the ones we payed for. Beside bad hygiene there is a problem of walls, that were literally moving and squeaking all night.

Liked: Cute rooms, helpful staff, good heating and hot showers. Free tea and coffee also a plus. excellent price! Didn't like: Location is not amazing, although close enough to old town, and cafes in the city centre area. The lift was out of order for a bit during the stay. Not quite enough room for 4 people plus bags in the room, but these are all minor things really.

A very nice hostel, right next to the Riga Old Town and Central Train Station. Staff was kind and helpful. The 2-person-bedroom had a nice bit of privacy as well.

, , , , , WIFI , .

Liked: Location perfect Didn't like: Nothing

Liked: The staff was very nice and room was tidy and warm. Advantage is they have a locker. Also the breakfast was amazing. Didn't like: The doorbell didn't work. Maybe because I've arrived quite late I didn't see the street sign of the hostel, tried to call the stated number ,but nobody answered, so I ended up walking around another 15 mins, till I asked someone in McDonalds and they helped me out.

Liked: i like that is in the city center of riga Didn't like: nothing

Liked: Futuristic shower was pretty rad Didn't like: Room door didn't lock, wasn't a huge issue. Not enough facilities

breakfast included with a vast variety of cream cheeses

Nice place to stay, comfortable beds and good bathrooms

Great location, close to city center. Nice staff but would be glad if they would know little bit more about the city and museums. Room was great! ( we had private room), bathrooms were clean, just some doors broken, Delicous breakfast, big choice, like milk, cornflakes, everything for bread, at least 10 kinds of cheese etc :) super!

Very good hostel with the perfect location near the train station and bus station.

Good breakfast, polite people.
