Villa 92 is a small hostel in the heart of Kandy, close to all the major tourist attractions including Temple of the Tooth, Bahirawakanda Temple, and Kandy Lake. It's an old Colonial villa turned into a backpack hostel with elegant interior and clean dorm rooms.
The Location
The hostel is only an eight-minute walk away from Kandy Railway Station and Kandy Bus Station. It's easy to get to the hostel, even if you are carrying big luggage. Contact the property in advance and arrange a tuk-tuk pickup to the hostel. The hostel is in an ideal place for sightseeing in and around Kandy. Peradeniya Botanical Gardens is only a short bus ride away from Villa 92. There are plenty of food options nearby, including cheap local restaurants, cafes, and fine-dining restaurants.
Rooms and Bathrooms
All rooms are air-conditioned. Apart from four- and six-bed dorm rooms, the hostel also has private double rooms and private family rooms with en suite bathrooms, which can accommodate up to four people. The dorm beds are sturdy and do not squeak away when someone gets in. The mattresses are big and comfortable with soft, clean linen. Apart from that, each individual bed has its own reading light and power sockets. There are individual safety lockers inside the dormitories. All dorms have one communal washroom with a few shower cubicles and toilets. Although shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel aren't supplied, hot water is available twenty-four/seven at the hostel.
Common Spaces
There's a separate reception area and on the down floor, there's a big communal area with a cozy couch and dining tables. The common spaces look elegant, as the property is an old Colonial bungalow. There are books, DVDs, and a flat-screen TV. Apart from the main communal area, there's also another one on the second floor where the dorm rooms are located. Both communal areas have fans and fast Wi-Fi. Breakfast -- which includes fruits, toast, jam, and eggs of your choice -- and tea/coffee are provided at the dining hall.
Summary
This is an excellent place to stay if you've got a few days in Kandy before traveling to the highlands of Sri Lanka. As the hostel is only a short walk away from all the attractions, you can save money spent on transport. The hostel, however, doesn't have a party vibe. Instead, it's more of a pace where you can take it slow and relax. The property has a very welcoming atmosphere and is good value for money.
