Space Garden Hostel Mirissa has four dorms, a restaurant, a rooftop (in high season only), and Wi-Fi (the downstairs network works well, but unfortunately for those located on the upper floor, this network is terrible).
The Location
A short walk from the main road where the bus will drop you, a short tuk tuk ride (or thirty-minute walk) from the train station or a ten-minute walk from the beach will take you to Space Garden. It's easy to locate, as it is listed on a signpost from the main road and it is fronted by a (Western-priced) restaurant inside that you will find the hostel reception. The reception doesn't have a laptop, so the receptionist won't actually be able to look up your booking -- make sure your email is on hand so you can check that the price you booked at is the price you pay. A five-minute walk will help you discover other restaurants and shops in the area.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms either have four or eight beds, all of which are en suite. They are spacious and have lockers large enough for most backpacks. They also have balconies. They're air conditioned and the mattresses are reasonably comfortable, though if you wish for a sheet/blanket you will have to ask, as they are not automatically provided. The beds are made upon the arrival of each guest, so at least you know the sheets are fresh. Each bed has a light point and power socket.
The bathrooms are large, with plenty of space for dressing, though the top half of the door is frosted plastic and rather see-through. There's a towel rail and you can put your toiletries on the sink. The shower gets very hot. The standard of cleanliness could use improvement -- the bathroom is clearly not cleaned daily, and the same can be said for the dorm. It's a bit of a problem when in a beach town as sand gets everywhere. But it's not too bad.
For a space-themed hostel, there's barely a hint of it in the dorms, asides from a few glow in the dark stars. If they really put effort into the theme it would make the hostel a much quirkier place to stay.
Common Spaces
The restaurant and attached outdoor seating make the common space of this hostel. There are ample tables and chairs here, though if you feel as if you should order something from the menu in order to be here, you'll be paying a more Western price. You'll find a couple of books and a guitar here.
If you're lucky enough to be at this hostel with a large group of travelers, this area would be lovely for relaxing with a beer in the evening, but does not have that real comfy "common room" feel to it.
Summary
It's not the best place for a solo traveler, as the common space isn't the most inviting. Overall this is a very average hostel.
