Sudha's Garden Hostel is a family-run hostel off the beaten track in a remote residential area of Kathmandu where you will feel like the only tourist around. It is quite reasonably priced but you get what you pay for -- only the very basics, and they charge you for everything else. The owners offer you a wide choice of extras, from bus tickets to dinner, but these are not really worth the price so it's better to stick to the basics or choose a more expensive alternative.
The Location
Sudha's Garden Home is located off the Northwestern Ring Road of Kathmandu, around an hour's walk from the touristy area of Thamel and a bit longer from Durbar Square. It is in an area with no facilities for travelers (such as money exchange or English-speaking eateries), which might be a downside if you are starting your trip here. Most people choose it for its closeness to the airport and it can actually be a really good choice if you are planning a trek in the Shivapuri National Park as the bus passes literally under your window and you will save a good forty minutes on the travel time.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel offers dorm rooms on three stories. Most of them have four single beds and one table. The beds are quite big and comfortable, but the rooms are small and feel crowded and they don't offer bedside tables or lockers. There is only one bathroom per floor, which is clearly not enough. Moreover, the bathrooms are very simple and there is no toilet paper available, only the water tubes with which to wash yourself. However, the place is relatively clean and there is fast Wi-Fi.
Common Spaces
The hostel boasts with a very nice garden where people often do yoga in the mornings. There is also a table with chairs to chill on outside. However, inside there is only a corner with cushioned seats near the window, which can accommodate a maximum of two people, so it is not really ideal for socialising. The kitchen is shared with the owners and can only be used when you order breakfast or dinner.
Summary
Sudha's Garden Home is a nice option if your priority is to save money and you are happy with the very basics -- a comfy bed in a clean home. However, if you are looking to use your hostel to socialise, like to have the downtown area on your doorstep, or enjoy added extras, you should maybe look for something else.
