Cambie Hostel - Nanaimo Reviews

my friends and i came into nanaimo late and chose to go here last minute. it was totally empty, and spooky. this was during the summer, too, which is high time to visit van island ... we were a little weirded out, wondering why it was dead, and it didnt take long for us to realize. just before we went to sleep my friend on the bunk below me found blood and a bedbug on her sheets. we brought the clerk upstairs to show her, and she apologized and refunded our money, which was nice, thank god! but we were so scared and didnt want to have bugs in our stuff ... it added some stress. we got out right then and there feeling disgusted. we should have read the reviews first before going. we eventually went elsewhere which was more like a home than a hostel. much much much better experience.

Cambie Hostel - Nanaimo is very basic, cheap, and great for passing through and getting a good night's rest, provided it isn't a weekend when the bar is pumping downstairs.

The Location

The location of Cambie Hostel - Nanaimo is great -- it is only a short walk to the Greyhound bus terminal downtown, and is close to any of the restaurants and amenities that you may need during your stay here in Nanaimo. The ferry terminal incoming from the terminal at Horseshoe Bay, is too far to walk and you can get to downtown Nanaimo by taking one of the buses from the ferry terminal that transport people to downtown Nanaimo (the Tofino Bus will do this).

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are all located on the second floor of the building above the pub. The rooms are spaced out around a square hallway that you navigate around to find your room. The dorm rooms have double beds per person on each of the bunks, a trademark Cambie Hostel feature. They are super comfortable for a good night's rest. There are en suite bathrooms for each of the dorms and they are basic with a bath/shower and a toilet and sink. They are kept super clean and are nice to use.

Common Spaces

There is a small kitchen with fridge, cooking appliances, television, and information about things to do in the area on the second floor; you can hang about here, but it is not enough to have many people sitting around having a dinner as it is too small. Other than that, the major social area for this hostel is the pub downstairs, which runs different events and specials each night. Check-in for the hostel is at the main bar too with the bar staff. They will set you up with anything that you need.

For the most part, the hostel isn't very social in that the amount of guests that staying here are minimal (at least during our stay). Nanaimo is not typically a place that people stop by for exploring tourist attractions in this town and region. If you do need to stay a night before moving on, this is a great place to crash, but if staying long term, it could get boring.

Awful -- stay away!

Tempting due to its low cost, but spending a bit more for a better place is well worth your money! This place is so gross that I can't believe we decided to stay there. To begin with, the room was a windowless box, devoid of AC, or even a fan. Fortunately it wasn't hot outside when we stayed there. The mattress was one of the worst we'd ever slept on, like sleeping directly on a box spring. The sheets had hair on them (to be fair, the bartender got us fresh sheets after we pointed this out). The bathroom floor was dirty. The toilet was leaky, so it alternately trickled and filled continuously, all night long. The lighting was dim. The kitchen was broken-down and dingy. And there was loud music till midnight. Really, the bartenders were as nice as could be, but they couldn't save this place from being disgusting and a really poor choice for even the budget-minded traveler.

i fell in love with the waitress there! it's rock n' roll.

tom tom

That is the worst hostel I've ever been. It smelled, the toilet was out of order, the heater didn't work (in January), and the music from downstairs was shaking my bed until 1 a.m. And nobody told me something when I checked in. Stay away from this place!

My room had no ventilation so it was uncomfortably warm. We were not warned about the loud music that would be emanating from the bar and rattling our walls. Upon our first complaint we were promised it would end at 1 am. It didn't end until 1:30 and the bar noise lasted until around 2. The check out time is also ironically earlier than any other hostel I've stayed at (10 a.m.). The assistant manager was nice but wasn't there till morning. The night bar staff were basically clueless and unhelpful. It was not clean and a little smelly. The sheets had stains and holes. When asked for replacements, more of the same. The graffiti on the beds said more of these same type of comments.

The staff person confirmed the fact that weekends are noisy due to the band downstairs. My partner is 42 and I am 60. I am presently seeking to cancel my reservation.

They did not clarify their cancellation policy at the time the reservation was made. (Mine was a telephone reservation made to 877-754-5323. No cancellation policy was cited. Their Web site cites a $10 cancellation fee if the cancellation is made 24 hours in advance of the booked dates.) This transaction will be contested through my credit card issuer.

There are lots of problems with this hostel. Our room smelled very mildewy and was dirty. The walls rattled till one a.m. from the live band downstairs, and the room was quite hot with NO ventilation. The staff were friendly and the location is good if you want to stay in Nanaimo.

A clone of our Gastown location, only island style! Nanaimo (a.k.a. Harbour City) is Vancouver Island's second largest city, the hub of the Island, and most appealingly, has the mildest, sunniest climate in Canada! As rich in history as its sister hostel, The Cambie Nanaimo International Hostel, Saloon & Grill is a renovated heritage building situated in the old quarter of downtown Nanaimo.

Only minutes from the Departure Bay ferry terminal, The Cambie Nanaimo International Hostel offers full-service, clean and safe accommodation to all travelers. It's the perfect place to experience the night life of downtown Nanaimo, as well as a great place to start your pub crawl, if you are over the 19 year drinking age.

Checking out Nanaimo's heritage attractions, burgeoning arts and culture scene or myriad of recreational activities to suit anyone's pocket!

One Hundred and Twenty Five years ago, downtown Nanaimo had many small wooden saloons with long counters, foot rails, mirror back splashes, and spittoons on the floor. Six of these saloons, which offered 19th Century Nanaimoains a place to drink and socialize, have survived their long history to still flank the street of present day Victoria Crescent . Two of our favorites, owned by gold-miners, sat on the site where The Cambie is now. In 1916, they were demolished to make way for the brick building that stands today and which, up until 4 years ago, still had two separate entrances for males and for females!

The Cambie has renovated these heritage buildings to retain their old style hotel charm and has returned them to their original luster to suit today's young budget traveler. We have double sized bunk beds, private bathrooms, showers & lockers, a games rooms in the saloon with satellite and sports TV, laundry facilities, no curfew, and 24 hour security.
