Samarian Hostel offers a budget stay for travelers passing through Medellín, additionally providing a co-working space and café.
The Location
The hostel is located at the edge of barrio El Velodromo and Estadio, about a five-minute walk from the Floresta metro station. The neighbourhood is safe, clean, and very green. Within a short walk, you can find restaurants, supermarkets, and smaller shops selling all the basic necessities. A popular area for nightlife, La 70, is about a fifteen-minute walk from the hostel. Samarian is about a fifteen-minute cab ride from Terminal Norte. Alternatively, you could take the metro from station Caribe to Floresta, about forty minutes' travel time.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Samarian Hostel offers a variety of rooms, both private and dormitories. The dorm bunk beds are crammed into small rooms, leaving little space for anything other than sleep. Each room offers spacious lockers for luggage storage, and each bunk has its own power outlet and reading lamp. The beds themselves are simple, with thin but clean sheets. Unfortunately where Samarian falls short is the bathrooms, which generally are not kept particularly clean. Only one dorm bathroom offers a hot water shower, which is finicky at best.
Common Spaces
Overall Samarian's vibe is meant for the young, hip, tech-savvy crowd that doesn't look to party too hardy. The hostel's common areas are well decorated with various pieces of colourful artwork and plant life.
Samarian's main entrance acts as a co-working space, with a row of desks and power outlets. Two more work desks are found upstairs in the TV room, which features a couple comfy couches. The kitchen is basic but offers everything needed to whip up a bite to eat. There is enough room for more than one guest to cook at the same time. Travelers are able to use the fridge and cupboard space to store food. The dining table itself is somewhat small but comfortable. Breakfast is not offered. The hostel is connected to its very own café, brewing up drinks and snacks for guests at an additional cost. The coffee itself is decent and well-priced. The seating is cozy and can comfortably hold about six patrons.
As with many Latin American accommodations, bugs can be expected, primarily the odd mosquito and/or cockroach. We found a dead cockroach on one of the staircases on one particular evening.
Summary
Samarian offers a cozy stay for travelers on a budget, however the cleanliness is less than ideal. For those looking for a place to work nomadically and decent coffee, Samarian could be a good option.
