There are two Vacahouse hostels in Huaraz and are often referred to One and Two instead of their full names; Vacahouse Huaraz B&B is most commonly known as Vacahouse One.
The Location
Vacahouse Huaraz B&B is located very close to the central area of Huaraz. It is about six hundred metres away from Plaza De Armas Huaraz, which is the main square in the town; it's also about the same distance away from the bus stations. The hostel is situated off the main street, right in front of a picturesque parque. The park is well maintained and does not feel dangerous at all. It is frequented by children and families, and sometimes at nighttime locals might come together for small social gathering.
There aren’t a lot of stores, restaurants, or entertainment directly surrounding the hostel, but with just a quick walk toward the city centre, guests can find lots of options.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Vacahouse One is a large hostel offering many four-bed rooms. The hostel does offer private rooms with double occupancy, but the majority of its rooms are four-bed mixed or women only rooms, each room also has its own en suite washroom. Rooms are not large and when fully occupied, space can be tight. Aside from the bunk beds, most rooms don’t offer any other furniture, which can lead to the rooms being extremely chaotic and messy.
There are enough power plugs available for each guest and personal lamps for each bed, but unfortunately not all of them work. Most of the power plugs are close to the ground and many of wires for the personal lamps are not long enough to be plugged in when using from the top bunk. As a result, many guests avoid using these personal lamps and rely only on the single light in the room.
Each room comes with its own en suite washrooms. The washrooms are basic and are not particularly clean, similar to the dorm rooms. Access to hot water is irregular and often times it's only lukewarm.
Common Spaces
There are plenty of areas within this hostel for guests to unwind, relax, and socialize. There’s a front living room with lots of comfy couches and a backyard garden area with a handful of tables that’s also used as the breakfast area in the mornings. There’s also a fully equipped kitchen for guests to use.
This hostel becomes lively and active during the nights. There seems to be a handful of travelers staying at this hostel for an extended period, creating a homey and welcoming atmosphere.
Maybe because of the size of the hostel or the amount of guests, the Wi-Fi is not the best. It is often spotty or does not work at all.
Summary
Vacahouse One is a friendly and affordable hostel. While facilities are basic and could be cleaner and upgraded, staff are hospitable and guests are bound to meet other sociable travelers here.
