Aham Hostel Reviews

Aham Backpackers Hostel is a small hostel spread over two floors with several air-conditioned dorm rooms with inclusive breakfast, towel, and free Wi-Fi throughout.

The Location

The hostel is located just a few minutes' walk from the start of the Mount Phousi Trail, and five minutes from the night markets and the popular Utopia Bar. Surrounded by many shops and restaurants, it has a great location. It is just a fifteen-minute tuk-tuk ride from the airport and even less from the north bus station.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The bathrooms are quite old and by no means spotless, although they're a fine standard for your average backpacker. They have a few wetroom-type cubicles, plus several other separate toilets and showers, plus a changing room. It's certainly enough facilities to make waiting for the next free one unlikely. The shower pressure is average but they are heated and there is free body wash in each. There are hooks and rails for your things.

The dorms have large bunk beds, the mattresses are quite hard, the duvets are comfortably thick for when the air conditioning gets a bit chilly. Lockers are not provided in the room, however you are welcome to use one of the small valuables lockers by the reception, for which you will be allocated a key at check-in. The bunks have half-privacy curtains to keep you from rolling over and looking into the eyes of your neighbor; all bunks have a power point and personal light. The rooms are clean though rather tight for space. The dorm doors are not locked-- the front door is locked late at night and one staff member sleeps next to it in case anyone needs to be let in (you are not given a key).

Common Spaces

The ground floor has a few nice tables and chairs outside, which is a good socialising space -- especially after 9 p.m., when you are not permitted to make noise inside. By the reception inside, there are a couple of sofas, plus a row of chairs. Upstairs, you will find a large space with several tables, mostly used at breakfast. A microwave, fridge, and water dispenser are located here. Free tea and coffee points are located on both floors.
The breakfast is very good with several choices, including toast and eggs cooked in different ways, fried rice, or a banana pancake; fresh fruits are available on the side. The hostel mostly attracts young backpackers and has a peaceful yet social vibe. The hostel offers laundry services.

Summary

This is a solid, good value option for backpackers, though if safety is your main concern and you cannot fit all your valuables into a small locker, you might want to consider going elsewhere.
