Zackry Guest House

The Review

Zackry Guest House is a basic, but nice and clean guesthouse. It is located close to the beach and restaurants but is about 20 minutes walk out of town.

The Location

Zackry Guest House is about 30 minutes drive from the Langkawi ferry terminal. A taxi or scooter will be required to reach the property. Public transport was not readily available, though there is ample scooter parking onsite. The property is set back from a main road about five minutes walk from the beach. There are multiple restaurants within walking distance to the property as well as a small number of convenience stores.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The private rooms are clean and basic with attached toilet and bathroom, the shower has hot water and there is ample space for toiletries, towels, and clothes. The rooms are very clean with room service daily and linen changing every three days. Private rooms have key access and feel secure.

There are basic three-bed mixed dorms available onsite with individual power and lights; the beds and rooms are clean and look comfortable. Lockers are available in the common area and require the use of a personal lock.

Common Spaces

The main common area is large and is filled with multiple tables for meals and socializing. There is a TV room with a couch for relaxing, board games, and a large library. The kitchen is well-equipped for traveler’s to cook their own meals. Free hot and cold filtered water are available as well as tea and coffee. There are two vending machines, one with breakfast and other snacks, the other with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The hostel offers free use of sunscreen and mosquito spray.

The common area is social, though offers separate space if you want alone time. There was no common computer offered for use.

A scooter is definitely recommended for this accommodation; one can be hired onsite for a competitive price. Laundry service is also available. The guesthouse is very secure with a swipe card needed to access the front gate. Four dogs live onsite at the property. The staff are available from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm and were friendly and helpful. The property is green friendly with the separation of waste via multiple recycle bins.

Excellent value
Clean room, clean bed, bathroom. lovely staff. not five-star, but is a backpackers place. We enjoyed and will go back. Langkawi is a beautiful island.

Cheapest Hostel in Langkawi
Very poor facilities, but it's the cheapest Hostel in Langkawi. Good Location, but it is a party backpacker hostel! So prepare that it is noisy in the night.

Cheap, good location, friendly staff
Stayed 2 nights in private room with no air-con. It was good value, beside the beach and cheap beer in the bar. what more do you need!
Incivility but comfortable
Langkawi is a nice place and Zackry's is a good choice -- well really the only choice -- for budget accommodation. The wife of Zackry is a really nice lady. However her husband is an absolute bear and seems to enjoy being as difficult as he possibly can. I have run accommodation places before and I know guests can be demanding and difficult but there really was no call for his treatment of people. It lacked any civility or politeness. It really put an incredible taint on the whole place and you could tell that people were really tiptoeing around reception trying to avoid him. I myself would always wait until the wife came on to ask any questions or arrange anything. I also overheard a lot of people saying they organized tours and trips through other providers simply to avoid having to deal with Zackry. I think if you can deal with some unpleasantness, the location does make up for it. But it's not much fun to have a day at the beach and come back to someone quite so unpleasant. They also have a lot of rules about all the things you can and can't do. Good luck if you decide to stay.
Very nice place to relax a few days
stayed here for nine days in october 2007. it's a really good place to stay -- clean rooms at cheap price (paid 25 RM for a single with fan), got my room cleaned every day, got new bedsheet and towel (real soft and fleecy!) every second day, there is a kitchen with big fridge for use, so i had my own breakfast including fried eggs, and if bad weather you have a TV and DVD player and a great DVD collection. nice place even to meet people from all over the world. it is a quiet place and not far from the beach and several good restaurants. will come back!

We stayed at Zackry Guest House for three days and it was the highlight of our Malaysian trip. Zach and Pete, the owners, were fabulous people. The rooms were lovely and all facilities just perfect. They have a wonderful honesty principle for using the internet or helping yourself to the drinks in the fridge. You have to pay the owners on your way out and all by keeping tab yourself. What an amazing way to run a place. The guest house was also equipped with a super collection of DVDs and books and one can spend a lazy day watching movies/reading. Just five minutes' walk from a nice sandy beach, a couple of restaurants, pubs, and shops, Zackry's is a nice, lively place to stay and meet fellow travelers.

We were there Christmas 2003 and this was one of the best places we have been to so far. It's cheap, has a very nice guesthouse, and Zackry is a nice host. They even pick you up from the airport and respectively take you back. (We did all payments via bank transfer and Sham was waiting for us at the airport). Langkawi is an amazing island with nice beaches, sailing, surfing, and diving opportunities. The best option for moving around is to hire a motorcycle or car. Just keep in mind, driving is on left (UK style). We met really nice and interesting people, and Sham is a star! Sham knows everything for the island, food, and places to go and see. We will go again for sure!

We visited Zackry Guesthouse for a week, and found it to be a comfortable and friendly place, definitely good for meeting people and sitting around with a beer. We found Zac to be a character, very interesting and helpful (as was his wife). We enjoyed our stay and wouldn't hesitate in going back there.
