Casa Yoses Hostel

The Review

Casa Yoses Hostel is a huge house converted into a lively hostel with a nice vibe and affordable rates for Costa Rican standards, considering what is offered. A bit more consistency regarding cleanliness and the service provided would be a plus.

The Location

Casa Yoses is located in a safe and relatively central neighborhood of San José. The center of the city is about twenty-five minutes away on foot, while you can also get a bus from the avenue, which is a block away and get there in about ten minutes. Within a ten-minute walking distance you can find a mini-market, several restaurants, a few bars, and couple of clubs, as well as a relatively big shopping mall that includes a cinema.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Dormitories and private rooms are also on offer (try to book in advance, especially if you are after a private room or a long stay, as in high season the hostel can be quite popular). Dormitories range between six and ten beds (bunks), and most mattresses are comfortable and lockers are provided. Some of the rooms are adjacent to the common areas where talking or partying can go on until late in the night, so if you are after an early sleep, make sure to request accordingly.

The bathrooms are large and the pressure is good, however, there are not many of them, so when the hostel is busy you could find yourself waiting a while to access one. Rooms and bathrooms are quite clean in general, however there are times when the level of cleanliness could be better.

Common Spaces

There are quite a few common spaces available, so it is up to you to choose how much you would like to interact with others. When entering the building you come across the reception and on its left there is a travel agency/desk, which is helpful to have onsite. On the ground floor there is also a dining area, a computer area (with four common PCs and good internet -- Wi-Fi is also available, but not in all dorm rooms) and a living room with comfortable sofas and a TV. There is also a large yard with a hammock, armchairs, and seating, as well as an outdoor bar that also has a pool table.

Most of the permanent staff are really friendly and helpful, however, a lot of the staff members seem to change regularly, so it really depends on the period you are there. Overall, and taking into account its affordable prices (free breakfast included), Casa Yoses is a good option for your stay in San José.

$15000 worth of camera gear stolen by staff from security room.
Long story short I put my gear in the security room and it was stolen within 3 hours by one of the staff members. The police didn't follow up with and investigation after I reported it. The management did everything they could to avoid responsibility (saying someone broke into the room). There was no sign of forced entry. Only one bag was looted. I would strongly recommend staying somewhere else. There is also a lot of petty theft from bags left out (mp3 players, cameras) most often by staff -- this coming from the Policia who reviewed my complaint.

Wouldn't stay here again.
The Positives: Wifi in rooms. Location -- supermarket and shopping centre around the corner. 15-20 min walk to downtown San Jose (or you can take the bus. Generally clean. The Negatives: No hot water -- we stayed 2 days and nights, tried 3 different showers at 4 different times of day, also no hot water in the kitchen. When told reception they didn't know how to solve the problem and didn't seem that bothered. Ants and midges in our room -- not a lot in one go, but a constant stream of 4-5. Kitchen facilities not good -- 2 frying pans and 2 saucepans (very dirty), 1 sharp knife. One of the gas rings kept setting alight outside of the ring, by the gas control. Overall not a pleasant stay.

Only stayed here one night but I liked the quiet neighborhood much better then downtown San Jose. Front desk staff spoke English and were very helpful and friendly. Its clean with free breakfast, internet, and big screen movies, cool art gallery, restaurant. I would definitely stay here again. Recommended.
Okay, but weird hostel workers and "regulars"
There are a bunch of us that have gathered at Casa Yoses every now and again and usually we enjoy the atmosphere and good location, a little fed up, reserve the right to our opinion given that we are paying customers, it's just our opinion. It is relatively clean and some staff members are friendly -- however, it seems that with the new LaDamajuana restaurant came unseemly and just plain gross people like this guy Luke and Amanda OConnor who we think are always stoned and work at the bar but seem to just hang out at the hostel. It's bad enough with the drunk elderly men roaming around the hostel but these two drunks should go to rehab. They are very weird and look to be friends with the hostel owners and that's fine but it may be time they show some manners for the paying guests.

Good hostel in a good location. Although it is a bit of a distance (about seven-minute drive) from downtown San Jose (quite a sketchy place) the area is much nicer and cleaner and has a plenty of bars, restaurants, and even two malls. Unless you specifically want to stay in downtown San Jose, this is a much better option. The hostel itself is located in a pretty original old mansion. It is clean but could use a few more touch ups, in my opinion. The hostel comes with a pool table, TV, free internet, and friendly, helpful staff.
Nice place. We had some good times in the bars around. "Viva la Calle de la Amargura !!!"

If you want to have a good time, there are lots of bars around. I also went to the volcano and to some canopy. They also have surfing trips. Your vacation is setup at Casa Yoses.
