Urban Oasis Hostel is a great hostel in an even better town. It's really the only hostel in the region, and what a treat it is. When you have limited options, it could go horribly, but the guys at Urban Oasis have outdone themselves and beat all expectations.
It's got the perfect location, just a couple of blocks away from the train station and the old walled city of Lecce. Everything you could want to see in the town is a couple of minutes' walk away. A coffee bar is a minute away and quiet as well. The only issue is that reception is rarely open -- basic hours are 3 to 8 p.m., so the check-in window is slim.
Rooms and Bathrooms
This may just be the most spacious hostel of all time! It is situated in an old Italian home, so huge ceilings and intricate tiled floors make you feel like you are getting the true southern Italian experience. Rooms have four beds when they could easily have double that. They do have lockers, but only for tiny valuables; they could definitely utilise the space better for some bag-sized lockers.
The bathrooms are a little confusing, Most rooms have an en suite, but seem to be situated outside the rooms, and only a few are actually in working order. They are clean at the start of the day, but after a few showers and no way for the water to drain, the floor is flooded, and with workers in sight it remains that way until morning. There are two showers in the one bathroom, which is odd, as it has a toilet and the door you would lock behind yourself. There's space to hang your clothes and towel, but the door doesn't provide full privacy.
This is where the hostel is next level. Never has there been a hostel with so many common spaces -- lounge rooms; kitchen; dining space; reading room; and a garden complete with fruit trees, herbs, and a hammock. The kitchen has free tea and coffee (or doesn't, depending on whether the staff has been in for the day or not), the book exchange is well stocked, and there's just an all-round welcoming, friendly environment especially for a solo traveler.
This is a great hostel, and a real gem for the region. The rooms are great and the place is clean and in the perfect location to explore the city as well as the coast on either side. It just lacks a little input form the staff, but we guess that's just part of the southern Italian way of life.
