Balkan Soul Hostel Reviews

You’ll struggle to find a Belgrade hostel that’s more modern than Balkan Soul Hostel. The property was extremely recently established and has only been open a few months at the time of review, and the facilities and the cleanliness of the place reflect that. The owner is also one of the kindest guys you could hope to meet, so all in all, it’s difficult to find any major fault with this hostel!

The Location

Balkan Soul is based right by St. Michael's Cathedral, meaning it’s in a pretty prime location. It’s within a ten-minute walk of Zeleni Venac -- a relatively central bus station with links to the local airport -- and just ten minutes on foot from Republic Square and the city’s main pedestrianised area. The centrality also means there are plenty of shops nearby, as well as a load of cafes, bars, and restaurants, so whatever it is you’re in need of, chances are you’re well within a fifteen-minute walk from it.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Though the dorms themselves aren’t particularly large, the beds in the hostel are incredibly comfortable, and the top-notch air conditioning means you’re just about guaranteed a good night’s sleep. There’s also no shortage of plug space so you’ll be able to charge your devices overnight. Large lockers are provided as well, although admittedly the locks on them feel a little temperamental. The bathrooms may not appear to be quite as modern as the rest of the property but they’re still very nice, with a toilet, a sink, and a shower housed in the same room. Plus, you’re more than welcome to use another bathroom on a different floor, so queues aren’t really an issue.

Common Spaces

While the dorms aren’t particularly spacious, the downstairs communal space very much is. There’s a large kitchen table, a bunch of cosy chairs as well as a massive corner sofa, and a big old TV mounted on the wall if you’re feeling anti-social. Connected to that common area is a modern kitchen with great facilities, including hobs, an oven, and plenty of pots and pans with which to cook. As modern as it all is, the area still retains a cosy feel, making it a great place both to relax and socialise in.

Summary

Balkan Soul is an excellent hostel with a really hospitable owner, great communal facilities, and a solid location. And if you’re worried about the place feeling tame or lacking an atmosphere, don’t be -- there’s a great balance between hotel-like facilities and a hostel-like vibe. Long story short, we’d one-hundred-percent recommend checking out Balkan Soul!
