Without doubt, Camp Kush by Hostel Unawatuna is one of the best hostels in the country. The defining feature of this hostel is the dorms, which are housed in teepees. The common area is a great place to hang out at any time during the day, and you're guaranteed a very vibrant a social atmosphere each evening. A free breakfast is served each morning, and the buffet dinner is delicious. These draw in all the guests, so it's a great opportunity to meet everyone.
The Location
The bus could drop you off anywhere on the main road. From here, ask a local to direct you to the train station. One you're there, cross the road that passes over the tracks. After approximately fifty meters, you'll see a left turn with a large "Camp Kush" sign. Turn left here and follow this road for a further three hundred meters as it winds in between the houses. The hostel will eventually be on your right.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are really unique. These are numerous teepees made of bamboo and straw roofs in a small field. Inside there are single beds on the floor arranged in a circle. At night, you'll be able to hear the sounds from whatever is living in the trees and you'll get the feeling that you're camping with friends -- it's awesome. The beds aren't very comfortable, but the experience of sleeping in a teepee overcomes this.
The toilets are clean and the showers (cold but nice) are built in bamboo cubicles. It all has a very hippie feel to it. The one downside to this hostel is the mosquitoes, especially when sleeping (there are no nets) -- remember to bring lots of repellent.
Common Spaces
At the center of the common area is a large, circular seating area that's large enough for everyone to sit together with some beers without it being too big to hear everyone talk. There's also some extra seating dotted around where you can chill on your own or with some friends if you want. Hammocks seem to be everywhere too. In the mornings, you'll get plenty of guests around for the free breakfast, which changes daily. And in the evenings, it's very likely that everyone will not only be hanging out here, but socializing together like a big family. Wi-Fi is ok but when everyone is on it, it's very slow.
Summary
This is a gem of a hostel that you will probably recommend to everyone you meet later on. Although it's a buzzing place to be, it's not a hard-core party hostel and you can relax here too, so all kinds of travelers will love staying here.
