Nelspruit Backpackers

The Review

Straddling the divide between guesthouse and homestay, Nelspruit Backpackers, this quaint, intimate little place is another addition to the high quality accommodation on offer in Nelspruit.

The Location

The long-running Nelspruit Backpackers is located on a quiet, residential side street about two kilometers or twenty minutes' walk southwest of the city centre. Backing onto the western edge of the Private Nelspruit Nature Reserve, which winds its way almost to the doorstep of one of the other backpackers' in Nelspruit, this place has the advantage of being less than ten minutes' walk from a large shopping mall, which has a number of restaurants and a Spar supermarket.

Rooms and Bathrooms

This is the owners' house too, so most of the rooms are in the house with a couple of cabins in the garden, housing double and twin beds. There are two bright six-bed dorms with fan, sharing common toilets and showers and one of four beds. The duvets are colourful and the mattresses comfortable. There are cupboards for luggage storage and power points in each room. There are two common showers -- one inside the house and one round the back -- that have twenty-four-hour hot water and three toilets, all scrupulously clean. The free Wi-Fi reaches all parts of the property.

Common Spaces

There is a kitchen for guests' use which is shared with the family and has plenty of everything you might need, including lockers. There is free tea and coffee all day, but no food is available here, hence the convenience of having the shopping mall just ten minutes' walk away. The large sitting room, also shared with the family, has comfortable sofas and a flat screen DSTV. A swimming pool sits in the back garden and there is a sundeck, which looks out on the nature reserve. The house is in a gated compound watched over by two large but ultimately friendly dogs (and a puppy and two cats).

After running this place for twenty years, the owners know what backpackers want; while this is not a place for party animals, it has an intimacy that sets it apart from the competition. The owners live onsite, so they are always available should you need them, and budget tours can be arranged here with Mbombela safaris. This lovely little place and friendly family are warmly recommended.

Great staff and information
Paul was a great help in planning our trip and even linked us up with a lodge and a ride into Mozambique. The trip with him in Kruger was perfect for our group because it was cheap and personalized.
Friendly Staff, Clean facilities, Pool needs attention.
I had a very enjoyable stay at this backpackers. Helen and Jimmy are great company. Would definitely recommend.

Situated in a quiet suburb Nelspruit Backpackers is situated on the Baz bus route. The building is colorful and a nice welcome is in store for you upon arrival. Both the dorm rooms and private rooms are quite bare but are maintained to a reasonable standard. The prices are average for South Africa, being neither too cheap nor too expensive. It is also close to all the local amenities (about five minutes walk through a very safe neighborhood). The outside area is not too well maintained and the pool did not look like it had been cleaned for a while -- the water was green. The "bar" leaves a lot to be desired as the owner does not have a licence to sell alcohol so it is teetotal. The indoor lounge area has a TV with a poor reception and a pool table that gets used for pretty much everything except for pool. The kitchen area is tidy and spacious and they do offer free tea and coffee. The owner of the hostel also organizes and runs his own tour company that takes trips into Kruger. From various feedback I received as well as experiencing it firsthand, it is quite poor in comparison to several other companies. There is a travel desk but there seems to be little organized about it. Overall, it is situated in a nice area with local amenities on offer but as a place to organize your stay trips to Kruger National Park or elsewhere, it is not the place to stay. With a "dry" bar it is not a lively place either.

Excellent, surroundings, and good facilities. If you are going to Kruger this is the place to stop off at on the way. The place is made even better by the friendly staff, especially the legend that is Neto.
